Salvador Kali (CD)
Sir Richard Bishop
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
Richard Bishop, one-third of the long running and absolutely indefinable art-rock group Sun City Girls, has been quietly crafting a string of beautiful solo guitar-based records. One of the best of these releases is 1998’s hilariously titled Salvador Kali. Its no surprised that this record found a home on legendary steel-stringed guitarist John Fahey’s Revenant label. Bristling with fingerpicked blues guitar stomps that owe a lot of Fahey, Bishop injects the music with his own strain of influences from traditional Eastern and Asian music. Fusing Americana, Indian raga and even a touch of Spanish flamenco, Bishop creates a highly unique and evocative soundworld that is ultimately defined by his imaginative and deft playing. By shading in the spaces with haunting piano and droning harmonium arrangements the music gains depth and atmospheric shadow. Salvador Kali draws from the world’s traditional music and finds Bishop coming up with some extremely lyrical compositions.
