Amoeba Review

02/23/2015

Led Zeppelin’s sixth album is a double-length, 15-song sprawl that represents the legendary band at the absolute height of its powers. The added space allowed Led Zep to absolutely thrive and show off every facet, from nasty blues rockers like “The Rover” and “Houses of the Holy” to the gently crafted prog ballads “Down By the Seaside” and “Ten Years Gone.” Epic is pretty much Led Zeppelin’s M.O., and Physical Graffiti possesses some of their best marathon rockers, particularly the one-two punch of “Kashmir’s” middle-eastern tonalities and uphill chug with “In the Light’s” heavenly psychedelia following. Though it hangs together expertly (even more so now, given Jimmy Page’s hard-hitting remaster), Physical Graffiti was already somewhat of an amalgam, comprising eight tracks recorded loosely at Headley Grange and outtakes from the band’s previous sessions, given room to flourish. So perhaps more than any other of the band’s recent reissues, Physical Graffiti’s makes a lot of sense. With this reissue, you can hear an early version of “In the Light” with “Everbody Makes It Through,” sans the trippy synth drone and with more psych-pop electric piano, for instance. Or there’s an early mix of “Trampled Under Foot” called “Brandy & Coke,” with a thinner mix that serves to highlight Robert Plant’s vocal over the full-bodied assault that pump blood through the later mix. Or a rough orchestral mix of “Kashmir” that perhaps can’t compete with the original, but when you’ve heard that one enough times, it’s nice to feel like you’re in the room with these guys putting together one of the most insane rock epics of all time. It’s all to say that when you’re dealing with an album that has the depth of Physical Graffiti, too much is never enough. It’s the ultimate version of an absolute classic, something as easily enjoyed casually by a newcomer as it is revisited and pored over by the enthusiast.
