Forever Turned Around (CD)

Sometimes a band just hits upon something magical when it’s assembling a collaborative team. For Whitney, Forever Turned Around is a testament to the combined skills of the players. Lead singer/drummer Julien Ehrlich and lead guitarist Max Kakacek shared equal lyrical and compositional duties, creating these soulful AM gold numbers over the course of several sessions with producers Bradley Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger) and Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, Father John Misty) and with OG rhythm guitarist Ziyad Asrar. The end result is a soulful, melodic-as-hell exploration of changing relationships, loneliness, and the fleeting nature of happiness. Forever Turned Around feels like coming home, with all the warmth, joy, and tension that come with it.

Roll With Me (CD)

Roll With Me is the first new album from British singer/songwriter Natasha Bedingfield since 2010, who first made her mark in 2009 with the hit single “Unwritten.” Bedingfield's accessible pop is distinctive for its R&B flair and a light huskiness to her flexible voice, and this new album is a satisfactory return to form. “Roller Skate” is a funky but subtle dance song with well-placed horn blasts. “Kick It” is a soulful number that still rides along a club beat, while “Hey Papa” and “King of the World” - the latter is a lovely ode to her son - brings in some Lily Allen-style Caribbean flavor.

Chronologic (CD)

Caravan Palace welcomes you back to their infectious electro-swing with new album, Chronologic. These are joyful, quirky tracks with hip retro sounds intermixed with house, jazz, and world music elements. Equally suited for fans of Daft Punk or Fishtank Ensemble, this is cross-cultural dance music. “Plume” is an uplifting, melodic treat, while “About You” is slinky with guest vocals from L.A. hip hop artist, Charles X. The hard-to-define “Miracle” features a chattering, near-rapping verse and eclectic instrumentation in its chorus on a background of euphoric electronic swells and beats.

Other Girls (CD)

Lillie Mae stands out from the current indie country/pop crowd for both her excellent fiddle skills and her distinctive, jaded-but-sweet vocals. The Nashville singer/songwriter grew up playing fiddle in her family's string band and her years of experience, virtuosic ability, and storytelling prowess are on full display on her sophomore album, Other Girls. The arrangements are lush and unique with plenty of nice details. “You've Got Other Girls For That” builds on a melancholy melody and layers of expressive guitars, and “A Golden Year” has lovely bursts of la-la's in its plaintive verses that call to mind The Shins in an otherwise haunting folk song. “Terlingua Girl” is swooping and sweet with a quirky outro that brings in distorted guitar for an unexpectedly darker ending.
