Machine Gun Etiquette (CD)
The Damned
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 09/01/2010
The Damned’s 1979 release, Machine Gun Etiquette, is by far the group’s best release since their debut Damned Damned Damned. The group had suffered a short-lived break-up in 1978 and lost their guitarist and primary songwriter, Brian James, in the process but came back stronger than ever with this release, which includes the recruitment of The Saints’ bass player Algy Ward. Punchy, rough, fast, and raucous, this release is essential garage style punk. Nearly every song will have you jumping out of your seat, from the opening “Love Song” to their brilliant cover of the MC5’s “Looking At You” to the moody instrumental of “Smash It Up Pt.1” and garage rock of “Smash It Up Pt. 2.” This album remains a classic, and nothing since has sounded as fresh, innovative, and full of true punk spirit.
