Whitney was born out of the ashes of the once great Smith Westerns and brought us their excellent debut Light Upon The Lake back in 2016. Their melancholy, contemplative folk-rock is the perfect counterpart to the former Westerns’ youthful bluster and glam infatuations, and what makes Light Upon The Lake stand out amongst the oft-sedate folky scene are the hooks. One after another, up and down the album, the songwriting is always clever and catchy as hell. You should check it out. Really. It’s a great record. And while you do that, you would do wrong not to grab these demo versions being issued by Secretly Canadian. These aren’t the half-baked noodlings of a studio creation; these are intimate renditions of fully formed tunes, whose stripped-down quality lends them a noticeably different texture than on the final album. Whereas the gorgeous arrangements of Light betray the band’s Graham Nash/Neil Young influences, the tape hiss, bright guitars, and over-modulated production of these demos almost sound like a stoned Ariel Pink-ish version of '70s soft rock. Also featuring the excellent unreleased track “You and Me,” these early recordings are essential to any fan of homespun indie rock.
