Internal Empire (CD)
Robert Hood
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
1994’s Internal Empire is a landmark record in Robert Hood’s excellent discography. Hood is a pioneer of minimal techno and his style is in full bloom on this release for the legendary Tresor label. Filled with absolutely skeletal beats and clipped synth pulses, these tracks are the essence of minimal space-funk. Austere but never boring, Hood’s hypnotic constructions erect and collapse themselves into ever-new shapes and sizes. Hood has said in interviews that the title Internal Empire is a reflection of inner spiritual knowledge gained through reflection. From the Zen-like repetition of this glowing, restrained music, it’s easy to understand exactly where he’s coming from. Crucial.
