High Priestess Of (CD)
Nina Simone
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 09/07/2010
This 1966 collection encompasses all of Nina Simone’s many moods during this time period. From the soothing soul of “Don’t You Pay Them No Mind” to the spiritual “Take Me To The Water,” there is no style she performed that is ignored on this release. And every song is a gem. “I’m Going Home” has a hypnotic upbeat soul swing to it. “I Hold No Grudge” is cinematic with a full orchestra directed by Hal Mooney. “Come Ye” is perhaps one of the most progressive songs on the album, with nothing more than Simone’s brilliant vocals backed by percussion. The remastered 2006 edition is well worth picking up.
