Some albums are destined to be iconic before they’re even released. Such is the case with John Carpenter’s soundtrack for the David Gordon Green Halloween sequel. Halloween 2018 has all the expected Carpenter traits — icy, stabbing synths, ominous atmosphere — but with enough of an era-appropriate update to still seem relevant and easy to relish. It’s no tricks, all treats here, not just for fans of the movie, but also for synth enthusiasts, retro nostalgists, and anyone who enjoys a good, moody soundtrack.
