Amoeba Review

Devon Williams 06/03/2010

Robyn Hitchcock’s got enough push-and-pull in his songs to spark curiosity and attraction. The prolific songster cranks out more and more songs letting his subconscious have its way with him a la Syd Barrett. His third album with The Egyptians, Globe of Frogs, begins with the quirky narrative “Tropical Flesh Mandala,” but when the absurd is too much to bear, just scratch away at the novelty, and you’ll find gold under the aluminum covering. On the stomping swirl of “Vibrating,” he gives the song its own musical personality before he even utters a word. The band flirted with moderate success on the light and bouncy “Balloon Man.” The song insinuates he could spend his retirement writing children’s books. In the chorus he sings, “I laughed like I always do. And I cried, like I cried for you.” See! Even he has feelings. “Luminous Rose” glistens atmospherically, and Hitchcock paints a serenely gruesome image of bodies floating beneath crashing waves before he lets on, “God finds you naked and he leaves you dying. The rest is up to you.” In his songs, it’s not his job to make sense, that job is the listener’s. On the ghoulish “The Shapes Between Us Turn Into Animals,” Hitchcock shows the similarities between domesticity and the caged-up beasts at the zoo. All it takes is a catalyst, “Waiting for the wine to turn an ache into rage,” sparking those primitive urges. Sometimes Hitchcock himself seems so tightly wrapped up in his own little cocoon, that he has to remind himself and everyone listening, that it’s all fleeting, as he does on “Flesh Number One” (“There’s nothing happening to you that means anything at all”). Hitchcock doesn’t take it all too seriously; he just hides behind his songs, glaring at you for a reaction, smirking at you with pleasure, waiting for you to crack.
