Third Man Records continues their effort to keep the traditions and values of classic American music alive with their first release by Nashville's Lillie Mae. Her first single, "Nobody," was released nearly three years ago and it seemed like a full-length album was a long time coming. But here she is with her first album, Forever & Then Some, in all its acoustic (plus an electric guitar), ol' fashioned glory. Think Bob Dylan's famous Basement Tapes or Neil Young's softer tracks on After the Gold Rush. Forever & Then Some is even produced by Jack White himself, who strips away any of the superfluous nonsense bad producers try on albums and whittles this down to a bare, pure sound. At the young age of twenty-six, Lillie Mae's debut has a kind of maturity and worldliness that seems to be missing in American music. Instead of embracing juvenilia and eternal youth, Lilllie Mae's songs are filled with complex emotions and deal with deep romantic feelings. Her first single, "Over The Hill and Through the Woods," definitely doesn't feel like it was recorded today. Embracing a particularly Nashvillian twinge with hints of rock and country, Lillie Mae sounds authentic when compared with other similarly minded bands. Her voice fits in the long line of mighty country ladies and her lifetime of experience (she's been a musician most of her life) helps her craft lyrics that are both catchy and thoughtful. "Wash Me Clean" trots along with snapping drum parts and shows off her talent as a fiddle player. The violin is a perfect counter to the simple melody with catchy, colorful licks. Lillie Mae's debut is like a cold glass of water: refreshing, satisfying, and just makes you feel good.
