Fordlândia (CD)
Jóhann Jóhannsson
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/31/2010
2008’s Fordlandia is post-classical composer Johann Johannsson’s second full-length for the 4AD label. The record also ranks as one of Johannsson’s best efforts. Loosely themed around a section of land in Brazil purchased by Henry Ford for farming rubber trees, the music here is very carefully measured and extremely beautiful. Of the recent crop of post-classical composers like Max Richter or Peter Broderick, Johannsson’s music stands out as some of the most formalist. Fordlandia tempers this tendency a bit with deft use of post-production effects that bring the sound up to date with some mesmerizing processing and subtle beats. This stunning record will appeal to fans of post-Eno ambient composition as well as those who have been following recent developments in modern classical music. Highly recommended.
