Everybody's Favorite Weapon (CD)
Free Moral Agents
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
Los Angeles’ Free Moral Agents started life as the solo recording project of Ikey Owens, keyboardist for art-prog giants the The Mars Volta. A full group quickly solidified around Owens, and FMA, in its current incarnation, is a live, democratic beast of a band. But before this came to be, Owens partnered with a spoken word artist known as J and current FMA singer Mendee Ichikawa to record 2004’s Everybody’s Favorite Weapon. While the album’s mesmerizing mixture of hip-hop, avant jazz, dub and ambient textures and soulful rock is slightly removed from the current incarnation of FMA, it’s amazing to hear the genesis of the group in these early recordings. Owens' deep sense of structure, melody and atmosphere is fully evident on tracks like “Omar on a Swing” and “Gem from a Broken Rock.” If Everybody’s Favorite Weapon is an impressive statement of what Owens can do on his own, the newly solid lineup of Free Moral Agents will undoubtedly become a band to watch.
