Amoeba Review
Amoeba Staff 10/12/2010
Despite the title, there are a number of songs on Deutsche Elektronische Musik: Experimental German Rock and Electronic Music, 1972-83 that don't sound very electronic. There’s Illbliss's funky 13-minute jazz flute meets Can jam; Ash Ra Tempel's simple hippy folk fairytale "Daydream" about a gypsy princess who lives in "rainbow land" but is still sad; and Can's opening song on the first disc, "A Spectacle," which is by all accounts a spazzy funk number. The only song that sounds totally stark and futuristic is Conrad Schnitzler's "Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal," which shines bright with vocoder-robot vocals. Still, synthesizers appear in almost every song, even if they are used as background atmosphere, and there’s a lot of repetition, used to calming, meditative effect. There are simple chugging drums, elements foreshadowing electronic music, as well as funk grooves. Amon Duul II contributes a majestic instrumental that is propelled by tablas and a funky bassline with violin, synthesizers, guitar, sitar and drum kit layered in. (Jamie Spidle)
