Amoeba Review

09/20/2017

Austin, TX duo Balmorhea continues a type of late-'90s post-rock sound that use the instruments and musical devices of rock to create a sonic work of art that's tragic and beautiful, meditative and catchy, all at the same time. A sort of spiritual successor to the ambient rock sound of Brian Eno or Sigur Ros, Balmorhea's Clear Language treads borders of genre carefully for an undefinable album that will get you emotional with its quiet simplicity and minimalism. Each track carefully builds on top of itself by adding new layers and sounds, but never to an overt climax. Balmorhea simply leaves it as is, with such restrained rigor. The title track prepares you for the album with a slow build of a song structured around a repeating synthesizer riff. Instead of using it to build a standard pop tune, they use the riff as a way to express sonic solitude through careful additions built around it that beautifully highlight their restrained sound. Instead of culminating with a heavy beat, the song goes towards unexpected and mellower territories that other artists might be afraid to touch. Alternatively, "Sky Could Undress" captures another side of the band with a track that could easily be called catchy. Instead of going into the new agey, ambient route of their opener, it starts off with a drum machine riff and funky synths that are still being used in unorthodox ways from their expected norms. In some ways, the rock rhythm of this beat makes this their most listenable song to those who might be a little less musically adventurous. The finale, "First Light," quietly builds up with guitars, synths, and bells for a whisper of a song that halfway hits an unexpectedly sharp crescendo before immediately cascading back to the original simple riff and ending with faint static and noise. Balmorhea captures a type of sound that's becoming much less prevalent today. It carefully straddles between pop and ambient in a way few artists have done. This is just such a perfect listen in the early morning.
