Capacity (CD)
Big Thief
Amoeba Review
06/07/2017
Big Thief's follow-up to last year's acclaimed Masterpiece drops the crunchy power chords and anthemic vocals to create a hypnotic, laid-back rocker of an album. Much of the instrumental work on Capacity, while always engaging and tonally satisfying, is left back to support the intimate vocals of Adrianne Lenker. She creates vivid portraits with lyrics that are frank yet still mysterious, picking out details of objects within the scene or specific actions that allude to a larger backstory. Backstory is the key word here as the album is full of a sense of nostalgia and reflectiveness. "Watering" is one of the more rocking tracks that begs to be listened to on a late night drive, with its steady drum beat and dirty/shimmery guitar, while "Haley" is a finger-picked, folk-y tune that brings to mind a breezy summer afternoon tinged with slight melancholy. "Shark Smile" starts as a catchy, alt-country pop tune, but eventually is saturated with hauntingly chaotic guitar noise, which never overtakes Lenker's delicate vocal delivery. The title track is filled with feeding back, bowed guitars that almost sound like cellos landing on the moon.
