4/20
may not be an officially recognized national holiday (yet) but that matters little to the legions of pot enthusiasts, especially in the Bay Area, who will gather at various venues and events throughout today to celebrate the annual hemp holiday. Think of 4/20 as the Record Store Day for cannabis connoisseurs. It's a day when new strains are unveiled, when clubs do giveaways and specials, and musical acts including lots of hip-hoppers perform to celebrate the beloved date. Assigned to the 20th day of the fourth month, which is derived from the daily 4:20pm designated dank time, 4/20 is a relatively recent phenomenon.  While it has only been around for a couple of decades, 4/20 day celebrations have exponentially grown in popularity over time, especially in the past few years.

Fueling this noticeable national increase in public celebrating of cannabis consumption, are the steps been taken by many states across the US toward legalizing or non-criminalizing cannabis for either medical or recreational use. While Colorado may have legalized weed and California just okayed it for medical use, from travels throughout both states, my experience is that California is much more open and free minded about cannabis consumption (not to mention way more affordable!). Consequently some of the best 4/20 celebrations are taking place in the Golden State today, especially in the Bay Area where Cypress Hill are among the many artists performing. Below is a rough guide to 4/20 events in the Bay.

Berner "Come On" from his 2014 Bern One Ent album Drugstore Cowboy

That old adage "do what you love" is perfectly applicable to the weed loving, nationally acclaimed prolific Bay Area rapper Berner. For the past decade plus this rap artist, weed activist/entrepreneur born Gilbert Anthony Mano has crafted a unique and phenomenally lucrative and fun career, all the while balancing his two main life passions of weed and rap music. Having built a strong rep as rap recording and performing artist, to date Berner's rich back catalog boasts 14 albums including his most recent full-length release found at Amoeba,  Drought Season 3, which is just one of many dropped on his own prolific Bern One Ent. record label. Equally respected by rap fans and peers, Berner's countless studio collaborations over the years include full length releases with such fellow Bay Area artists as Messy Marv, Equipto and the late great rapper The Jacka with whom he recorded the three part aforementioned Drought Season trilogy. Others in the really long list of Berner collabs include B-Real, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Young Thug, and Too $hort. Perhaps even more widely known in hip-hop is his longstanding relationship and collaborative work with Wiz Khalifa. Having been down since day one with the Pittsburgh, PA based, fellow weed loving hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa, the Bay Area artist counts himself as among those part of Khalifa's elite Taylor Gang Ent. label crew along with such others as Project Pat, Chevy Woods, Ty Dolla $ign, and Tuki Carter.

The Big Bong Theory, Two and a Half Grams? Untitled New Chuck Lorre Comedy To Lead Network TV's Next Wave: The Potcom

Posted by Billyjam, January 27, 2016 07:19pm | Post a Comment

Should we need further proof that weed's gone mainstream, as per The Hollywood Reporter, TV comedy super-producer Chuck Lorre is currently shopping his new Warner Bros. Television-backed weed comedy script to network television executives.  This latest from the creator of such successful TV comedies as The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly, Two and a Half Men, and his latest creation Mom on CBS, is a continuation in style of his previous shows. Co-written with David Javerbaum (The Daily Show), it is described as a situation comedy about a group of potheads in a legal marijuana dispensary in Colorado.  The as yet unnamed show inspires such potential potcom titles as The Big Bong Theory or Two and a Half Grams.  But not Buds. That stoner show title has already been snagged by NBC who, via a joint venture with Naomi Scott and husband Adam Scott (NBC's Parks and Recreation) are in development stages of their pot comedy Buds that's reportedly also set in a Colorado pot dispensary.  Another husband and wife pot comedy creative team are Ben Sinclair (Sisters) and Katja Blichfeld (30 Rock), who in 2012 unveiled the popular Vimeo web series High Maintenance about Brooklyn, New York marijuana deliveryman "The Guy" and all the characters he meets. HBO commissioned six episodes of High Maintenance to air in 2016.  Meanwhile Amazon Prime's streaming outlet will be producing the  "marijuana-themed family dramedy" starring Margaret Cho. Variety described it as about Cho, "who after court-ordered rehab gets a chance to start over, but has to move in with her dysfunctional family who now runs a pot dispensary."

It's 4/20: Rallying Call Continues To Be Legalize It, And Make Today A National Holiday

Posted by Billyjam, April 20, 2015 12:50pm | Post a Comment

On his past Friday night's HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, the long time outspoken supporter of pot legalization said that 4/20 (aka today's date April 20th) should be made an official national holiday. He says this because already it is the day set aside to fully celebrate the positive effects of weed and the advancements and recent strides towards marijuana legalization and its accepted use for medical uses - it just needs a Federal stamp of approval. In showing his sincerity for his proposal Bill Maher noted that he had alredy created a Change.org petition that calls on Congress to make every year's April 20 date a national weed-related holiday. He is serious and has consistently championed the legalization of pot, routinely calling out President Obama on his slowness to fully promote legalization on a national level.

You can sign the Change.Org petition here which has already reached about 80% of its desired petition signees. Despite the general lax attitude towards weed in California these days, thanks mostly to the efforts of those who fought for medical cannabis legalization which date back to Proposition 215 (AKA the Compassionate Use Act of 1996) the California law concerning the use of medical cannabis, it is important to remember that it is still not legal for recreation use in the Golden State. And hence why a couple of grassroots political groups have recent filed ballot initiatives to try and make weed (medical and recreational) more accessible to adults in the State. The California Craft Cannabis Initiative is for both full legalization and for initiating both a cannabis trademark and a state cannabis commission. Meanwhile the other recently filed ballot initiative is The Compassionate and Sensible Access Act which is more of a health-care (versus recreational) rooted initiative that is pushing for weed to be viewed and fully accepted as a “legitimate, alternative medicinal treatment.” Both of these (or just one or neither) could well end up next year (2016) for voters in California to make a decision on at the ballots.
