Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

Black Moon - Enta da Stage

Black Moon - Enta da Stage: The Remixes

Dropping several weeks after Fat Beats reissued Black Moon’s 1993 hip-hop classic Enta Da Stage on vinyl (also as a 2LP set), was the Enta Da Stage: The Remixes LP set by the influential Brooklyn crew. Both vinyl releases are essential for any hip-hop library. The Remixes LP features remixes and alternate versions previously released in non-album format (incl. M.W. Smooth's mix of "Who Got Da Props?" and DJ Evil Dee's remix of "How Many MC's") as well as previously unheard material such as Buckshot's new vocal version of "Shit Iz Real.” - Billyjam, Hollywood

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with BadBadNotGood

BadBadNot Good What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

We were excited to have the eclectic Canadian jazz / hip hop / electronic group BadBadNotGood visit us recently at Amoeba Hollywood for a What's In My Bag? episode. They brought along soul singer Charlotte Day Wilson, who collaborated with them on the track "In Your Eyes." Having joined the ranks of varied artists who have recorded a song entitled "In Your Eyes," Wilson and drummer Alexander Sowinski both grabbed different albums with that same title. "It's a pretty classic title," says Wilson, "which, I think, matches the tone of the song that we wrote." Of course not all the records they picked were of that same theme, and between the four of them they managed to hit up nearly every section of the store.

BadBadNotGood are a Canadian jazz quartet known for their interpretations of modern hip-hop tracks and collaborations with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Ghostface Killah, and Tyler, The Creator. Originally a three-piece, Matthew Tavares (keyboards), Alexander Sowinski (drums), and Chester Hansen (bass) met and began working together through Humber BadBadNotGood IV College's jazz program in Toronto. After uploading video of the trio performing a piece based on an Odd Future track, they began attracting worldwide attention and caught the ear of Tyler, the Creator. In 2011, they released their debut LP, BBNG, recorded a live session with Tyler, opened for Roy Ayers, and performed for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards.

Tyler, The Creator's 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival to include ScHoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Action Bronson, Death Grips

Posted by Billyjam, August 4, 2016 08:15pm | Post a Comment

Along with such other artist-curated music events as the Hierogplyics' annual Hiero Day, The Roots' Picnic, and Diplo's national touring Mad Decent Block Party, Tyler, The Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proves that increasingly artists are taking further control of aspects of their careers. Once the domain of concert promoters, more and more artists have been producing or co-producing their own music festivals. MURS' sadly no longer, high-caliber indie hip-hop Paid Dues festival which, up until 2013, presented lovingly assembled hip-hop shows for the better part of a decade.

Although hard work even when these artists work in collaboration (such as Tyler the Creator whose teamed up with Goldenvoice), these artists are doing a damn good job presenting their own music festivals. Proof is evident in the line-up of artists, announced today, for the Odd Future star's 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival taking place in LA in three months from now. Artists confirmed for this year's weekend long music event will include A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Erykah Badu, Chance the Rapper, Death Grips, Flatbush Zombies, DJ Mustard, TOKiMONSTA, Pretty Lights, Kehlani, The Internet, Domo Genesis and, of course, Tyler, The Creator himself.  Check the flyer above for some of other artists on the line-up, with more names to be announced later. Tix will go on sale Monday, August 8th, for the two-day event (Saturday/Sunday, November 12th and 13th) that will take place in Los Angeles at Exposition Park.
