Posted by Amoebite, March 6, 2019 03:30pm | Post a Comment

UNKLE - What's In My Bag?

We were very fortunate to have DJ, producer, musician, and record label executive James Lavelle visit Amoeba Hollywood to share some of the music and movies that have shaped his tastes, including a film by a director he says influenced how looks at Los Angeles. That director is Michael Mann and the film is his 1995 masterpiece, Heat. "(This is) a film that I love very much and I love the director," he told us. Lavelle also talked about The Watchmen, Neneh Cherry, and the impact of DJ Shadow's landmark debut album Endtroducing... making for a particularly eclectic and engaging What's In My Bag? episode.

English artist James Lavelle co-founded the Mo' Wax record label with Tim Goldsworthy in 1992, UNKLE - The Road Part I - Amoeba Musicreleasing now-classic records by Money Mark, DJ Krush, Dr. Octagon, Luke Vibert, Blackalicious, and DJ Shadow. After the release of Endtroducing..... in 1996, Lavelle and DJ Shadow collaborated on the UNKLE project. The band's first LP, 1998's Psyence Fiction featured guest appearances from Thom YorkeRichard Ashcroft, the Beastie Boys' Mike D, and Badly Drawn Boy. Lavelle teamed up with Richard File for UNKLE's 2003 followup, Never, Never Land, with contributions from 3D (Massive Attack) and Josh Homme (QOTSTA).

Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

Best of 2017 Hip Hop

Black Moon - Enta da Stage

Black Moon - Enta da Stage: The Remixes

Dropping several weeks after Fat Beats reissued Black Moon’s 1993 hip-hop classic Enta Da Stage on vinyl (also as a 2LP set), was the Enta Da Stage: The Remixes LP set by the influential Brooklyn crew. Both vinyl releases are essential for any hip-hop library. The Remixes LP features remixes and alternate versions previously released in non-album format (incl. M.W. Smooth's mix of "Who Got Da Props?" and DJ Evil Dee's remix of "How Many MC's") as well as previously unheard material such as Buckshot's new vocal version of "Shit Iz Real.” - Billyjam, Hollywood
