Ohio Players (CD)

The Black Keys

The Black Keys continue their sonic evolution with Ohio Players . It's one of the band's lushest, liveliest albums, with soul and gospel-tinged blues rockers in abundance. "Beautiful People (Stay High)" is an ultra-hooky, bigger-than-life anthem with Britpop and bar blues influences. "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" is a Motown-meets-the-blues ballad rich in swelling strings and romantic regret. Guest appearances from Beck, Juicy J, Lil Noid, Dan the Automator, and Noel Gallagher add to the fun.

The Smile's Wall of Eyes is a powerful slow burn. These languid, lush songs unroll at their own pace, building a powerful mood that crescendoes as the album goes along. Alongside drummer Tom Skinner, Radiohead members Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke magnificently blend familiar elements of their legendary band's sound while still charting exciting new sonic ground.

Adrianne Lenker's Bright Future is a testament to growth, resilience, and the transmutation of emotions. That's transmutation in both the musical and the emotional sense: the second track is titled "Sadness as a Gift," if you needed a case in point. There's a tears-in-your-eyes clarity to the heartbreak detailed in these songs with their keening strings, tender guitars, and Lenker's sweetly bitter vocals. Bright Future is an album that finds meaning in the temporality of both pain and pleasure. An album that feels like a companion for the days you're looking for something or someone to hold onto.

Drive-Away Dolls (BLU)

Ethan Coen

Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, this comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.

Just in time for the warm weather days, San Francisco hip-hop star Larry June is back with his fifth album collaborating with Dallas producer extraordinaire Cardo, The Night Shift . Heavy doses of g-funk, yacht rock, and jazzy grooves provide the backdrop for these two to work their magic, and with features from 2 Chainz, ScHoolboy Q, Too $hort and more, The Night Shift will be on repeat in the coming days.

Recipe For Hate [Translucent Tigers Eye Vinyl] (LP)

Bad Religion

1993's Recipe for Hate is Bad Religion's most eclectic album and a controversial one for the fans. The band focuses on events of the day, serving scathing commentary on the state of the nation, specifically alcoholism, abortion, and homelessness. Greg Graffin reaffirms his place as one of the best punk rock vocalists with his trademark combination of perfect pitch and skeptical emotion. The album also features guest vocals from Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano.

Only God Was Above Us (CD)

Vampire Weekend

Only God Was Above Us is the poignant, urgent new album from Vampire Weekend. With a name taken from a 1988 news article about a terrifying in-air airplane incident, it's perhaps no surprise that the songs seem to share that same sense of faith in the midst of catastrophe. "Capricorn" careens between grinding electronic noise, sweeping strings, and intimate indie guitar. "Gen-X Cops" starts off with the intensity of a high-speed car chase before shimmering, slightly melancholic harmonies kick in. Only God Was Above Us is some of Vampire Weekend's best work; fans will dig this expansion in the band's sound.

Britti's triumphant debut, co-written and produced by Dan Auerbach, is inspired by musical luminaries from Diana Ross to Dolly Parton, and influenced by contemporary legends like Beyoncé and Sade. The album is a personal love letter to her native New Orleans that reflects her diverse musical influences, including R&B, blues, Zydeco, Motown, and even some glittery country. The emotional and stylistic scope of the songs is far-reaching, but her unique voice works as a through line, holding them together.
