Burger Boogaloo returns to Oakland’s Mosswood Park on Saturday, July 6th and Sunday, July 7th for Burger Boogaloo and Amoeba a 10th anniversary shindig featuring The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Scientists, Shannon And The Clams, Sheer Mag, Derv Gordon (The Equals), and more! As always, the Boog is staying true to its roots with the return of the one and only Czar of Bizarre, John Waters, as the Mister of Ceremonies, and a lineup of historic punk rockers and young up-and-comers.

But wait, there’s more! The Burger Boogaloo staff has committed themselves to helping those affected by Oakland’s ongoing housing crisis and will host a series of fundraisers both before and during the festival to raise money for those in need. Additionally, staffers will be volunteering with the organization Punks With Lunch, including a Benefit Show with Shannon Shaw at The Uptown on Friday, January 18th with 100% of ticket sales going to the organization.

Burger Boogaloo has also been partnering with The Homeless Action Center, the only legal service program in the Bay Area that focuses exclusively on public benefits advocacy as a critical tool to reduce and end homeless. HAC provides legal advocacy that is no-cost, barrier-free, culturally sensitive, and non-judgmental.

Essential Records: The Jesus & Mary Chain 'Psychocandy'

Like many records whose reputations precede them, Psychocandy, the debut album by Scottish troublemakers The Jesus & Mary Chain, should be approached with caution and when you’re ready, not because someone told you to listen to it.

I picked up Psychocandy sometime in 2002 from Amoeba Hollywood, shortly after the store opened. I was going to school in San Diego at the time, and my friends and I would make trips up to Lou’s Records in Encinitas and Amoeba to binge buy used CDs. No one told me to get Psychocandy like Barry from High Fidelity, but I knew I probably should, judging by my growing obsessions with Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine.

The first time I put it on, on my shitty car stereo, I couldn’t really hear what was going on. A car full of people talking didn’t help. It just sounded like static to me, but I was intrigued. I listened later on and, of course, became full-on obsessed.

“Just Like Honey” is the obvious entry point and still a hauntingly beautiful song that is universal in a Nirvana sorta way. But the album’s next few tracks are its best. “The Living End” isn’t just a song title that Gregg Araki would nick for his great movie of the same name; its overall vibe is so underground and elusive that listening always makes you feel a lot cooler than you really are. It doesn’t matter that I’m way too chicken shit to ever ride a motorcycle. Both “The Living End” and “Taste the Floor” introduce a sonic trick that other great bands would mimic, like the aforementioned Nirvana, their inspirations in The Pixies (who themselves would cover J&MC’s “Head On”) and shoegaze followers like Lush and Swervedriver, piling added distortion on what already felt like too much to begin with, like pouring chocolate syrup all over a chocolate cake. It’s overwhelming and awesome.

By now you and I have heard the arguments for and against Scottish independence from the UK but as someone who has naturally bristled like a thistle when diasporic people argue passionately and ill-informedly about another country's political situations (which they are thankfully powerless to effect) I'll keep my political opinions to myself. What I will do instead is far more frivolous purposes -- that is list the best Scottish bands of all time.

Given its small population, Scotland has produced a fairly shocking amount of great music. Sure, there have been occasional English bands of note -- almost always from the north -- but I've always taken Anglophiles' preference for all things (assumed to be) English over English language pop from anywhere else as proof of a terminal subcultural defect. It's not really fair to blame England for Anglophiles any more than it is to blame Nirvana for Puddle of Mudd but I suppose it's because so many of the helmet-haired horde mistakenly think that I am one of them that they so vex me. How could I not be an Anglophile when I drink more tea than the average North African, enjoy curry in all of its Asian forms, and my favorite writer is Irish

Day #12 - Artist #12 - Noah and the Whale:

Noah and the Whale Noah and the Whaleformed in 2006 in Twickenham, London, England, playing a brand of folk influenced indie-pop rock and released their debut album Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down in August 2008. At first I wanted to just write these guys off as just another indie-pop band singing love songs. But the more I listened to it, the more curious I was. I promised I wasn't going to use the cheesy "metaphor" method of describing a band after I used it in The Hold Steady profile, but again, this band's music seemed unique, yet there was something oddly familiar about it. It was as if they were channeling someone or something in order to create their music. After two or three listens, I couldn't hear the band anymore. It wasn't that the music was inaudible, it was that I couldn't hear Noah and the Whale on the surface. I could only hear a particular voice that was coming from within it.
