Jose James - What's In My Bag? - Amoeba Music

Acclaimed neo-soul/jazz/hip-hop musician and composer José James did some shopping at Amoeba Hollywood recently and talked with us about some of his favorite artists for our latest What's In My Bag? episode. James went looking for a Tribe Called Quest t-shirt and ended up with an Eric Dolphy shirt instead, happily surprised to see the jazz saxophonist/clarinetist printed on a piece of apparel. "He's a really deep figure for me, and for jazz," he explained. "His album Out To Lunch, on Blue Note, to me is the highest standard of avant-garde music in America." James went on to discuss Dolphy's influence on John Coltrane, saying he "encouraged John to let the saxophone speak. He was really trying to get beyond the limitations of the instrument, and just make sounds." James had similarly thoughtful things to say about every item he picked, giving us an educational and entertaining peek into his shopping bag.

Born in Minneapolis, MN, José James attended The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. His oeuvre has been compared to D'Angelo, Frank Ocean, Miguel, Bobby McFerrin, and Leon Thomas. Jose James - Lean On Me - Amoeba MusicHe released his debut LP, The Dreamer, in 2008 via the Brownswood label. James followed his first LP with Blackmagic (Brownswood) and For All We Know (Verve), both released in 2010. The latter album took home the Edison Award and the L'Académie du Jazz Grand Prix for the year's Best Vocal Jazz Album.

The Best "What's In My Bag?" episodes of 2016

Season 9 of What's In My Bag? kicked off with our first double feature - one episode featuring all the members of Future Islands and a second video with the lead singer, Sam Herring, devoted to his hip hop picks. And from there we barreled headlong into the first weeks of 2016 with several of our favorite episodes, including Savages, The Internet, and Flea & Amy-Jo Albany. We had a lot of fun this season and we were fortunate enough to talk to an electronic music pioneer, a celebrated film director, a Supreme, a Japanese artist and producer, a fashion designer, and many, many more.

Here are our 15 favorite episodes from season 9. Enjoy and thanks for watching!!

The Internet

The six members of LA-based soul band The Internet definitely brought the fun while sharing a few of the artists and albums that impacted them growing up. Their lighthearted goofiness and easy dynamic was pure entertainment, but their picks were genuine and from the heart.

Tyler, The Creator's 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival to include ScHoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Action Bronson, Death Grips

Posted by Billyjam, August 4, 2016 08:15pm | Post a Comment

Along with such other artist-curated music events as the Hierogplyics' annual Hiero Day, The Roots' Picnic, and Diplo's national touring Mad Decent Block Party, Tyler, The Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proves that increasingly artists are taking further control of aspects of their careers. Once the domain of concert promoters, more and more artists have been producing or co-producing their own music festivals. MURS' sadly no longer, high-caliber indie hip-hop Paid Dues festival which, up until 2013, presented lovingly assembled hip-hop shows for the better part of a decade.

Although hard work even when these artists work in collaboration (such as Tyler the Creator whose teamed up with Goldenvoice), these artists are doing a damn good job presenting their own music festivals. Proof is evident in the line-up of artists, announced today, for the Odd Future star's 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival taking place in LA in three months from now. Artists confirmed for this year's weekend long music event will include A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Erykah Badu, Chance the Rapper, Death Grips, Flatbush Zombies, DJ Mustard, TOKiMONSTA, Pretty Lights, Kehlani, The Internet, Domo Genesis and, of course, Tyler, The Creator himself.  Check the flyer above for some of other artists on the line-up, with more names to be announced later. Tix will go on sale Monday, August 8th, for the two-day event (Saturday/Sunday, November 12th and 13th) that will take place in Los Angeles at Exposition Park.
