Wolf Parade - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Dan Boeckner and Arlen Thompson of Wolf Parade were at Amoeba Hollywood recently schooling us on some of the records that influenced them in their formative years, new records they've been getting into, and Canadian heroes that have been overlooked by the "arbitrators of cultural taste" in their own country. Take, for example, the industrial group Skinny Puppy. "I would argue that this is the most influential Canadian band of the 1980s," Boeckner proclaimed, calling them, "a totally misunderstood and under-appreciated band in its own country...without this band you wouldn't have Nine Inch Nails (and) Ministry." Boeckner goes on to explain that Canadian taste-makers have "pretty much erased these guys from the history books." There was much more to be said about all of the records picked by the two band mates, making for an insightful and fun What's In My Bag? interview.

Canadian indie rock band Wolf Parade formed in 2003 when former Frog Eyes member Spencer Krug found himself with three weeks to get a group together. He teamed up with Dan Boeckner (ex-Atlas Wolf Parade Cry Cry CryStrategic) and the pair began writing songs in Krug's apartment, accompanied by a drum machine. Arlen Thompson eventually took over percussionist duties. A year later, the group traveled to Portland to work with Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock on their self-titled Sub Pop debut EP. The current lineup solidified when Dante DeCaro (ex-Hot Hot Heat) signed on in 2005.

Two Out-of-Print Skinny Puppy Albums Getting Reissued on Vinyl

Posted by Amoebite, September 18, 2017 06:15pm | Post a Comment

Skinny Puppy Vinyl Reissues

Two long out-of-print, hard-to-find records from legendary industrial band Skinny Puppy are getting repressed on 150-gram vinyl. Due October 13th, these are must-haves for fans of the band. They are both available now for pre-order on Amoeba.com and they'll ship FREE to U.S. addresses!

Skinny Puppy Remission Remission, the band's 1984 EP for Nettwerk, was originally available on vinyl and cassette before being released as a CD in the '90s -- the last time this crucial EP was widely released for sale. The 2017 vinyl reissue features the original tracklisting from 1984. (Later releases on other formats included additional tracks, which is not the case here.) In 1987, the Remission EP was packaged with the band's debut full-length, Bites, as Bites and Remission.
Skinny Puppy Bites

Fittingly, Bites is the second release from the progenitors of EBM and electro-industrial. First released in 1985, the album featured the band's first hit of sorts, "Assimilate," which includes a sample from the 1976 film Marathon Man. Apart from the combined Bites and Remission reissue, the LP wasn't available in a new version again until 1993, when it was released on CD billed to Hell-O Death Day, the pseudonym the band used while touring as the opening act for Chris & Cosey.

It's Cheaper Used: Classic and Out-of-Print Goth & Industrial Titles in Stock at Amoeba Hollywood

Posted by Aaron Detroit, June 9, 2010 05:03pm | Post a Comment
Looking to stock back up on some dark classics? Maybe looking to try something you overlooked long ago? Well, if you’re a fan of classic Industrial or Goth, or just looking to be adventurous, we’ve got some great deals on some hand-picked, used and out-of-print titles for you in our little dark corner of the Goth/Industrial section at Amoeba Music Hollywood*.

Front 242 Tyranny >For You<
Ten years after the group’s genesis, Front 242 released their most commercially successful album with their 1991 major-label debut, Tyranny >For You<. Though not as solid as the band’s 1988 essential Front by Front , Tyranny is a relentless and charged slab full of EBM bangers including “Moldavia,” “Tyranny (for You),” and the club hit “Rhythm of Time, “ which some may recall from a memorable scene in the 1992 camp classic film Single White Female. The album has surprisingly aged very well and sounds pretty damn great nearly 20 years later -- the slow-burn “Sacrifice,” the minimal pulse and melodic sway of “Soul Manager,” or the chaotic blasts of hidden track “Untitled” (there are 3 unlisted ‘hidden’ tracks here –every bit as intense as the rest of the album). Listening to this album now, really makes me wish some youngins would mine these sounds again. Tyranny >For You< is currently out of print on CD but Amoeba Music Hollywood has it in stock used for just $4.99!*

The Creatures Boomerang
Siouxsie and Budgie returned to The Creatures in 1989 after putting the project on hold 6 years prior as The Banshees' popularity sky-rocketed. Boomerang was the result of sessions in a secluded barn in the capital of Flamenco music– Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. The album was probably The Creatures' most successful and includes some of their most well known songs, such as “Standing There” and “Pluto Drive.” Boomerang sweeps between dark breezy exotica with heavy brass arrangements to minimal bluesy crawls to the more atmospheric and chilly. The CD is out of print, but Amoeba Hollywood has several used copies in stock now for just $9.99*

Skinny Puppy Twelve Inch Anthology
A singles collection of sorts or an early ‘Best Of’, Skinny Puppy’s out of print 1990 compilation Twelve Inch Anthology brings together several tracks from their multiple ‘80’s 12 inch EPs. It includes full extended versions of “Dig It,” “Addiction,” and “Testure.” The jewel of this compilation, however, is the Tom Ellard-assisted remix of “Assimilate,” easily the best version of one of the band’s best songs. The collection highlights my favorite period of Puppy and nobody since has quite as successfully combined the sinister with the psychedelic and the groovy like Puppy. Amoeba Hollywood has several used copies of this now-deleted gem in stock for just $9.99*

Nitzer Ebb That Total Age
Relentless pounding and floor-filling aggression are the sounds to be found on this 1987 classic debut from the DAF-inspired Brit duo Nitzer Ebb. Punkish in attitude, That Total Age features the monster club hit “Join In The Chant,“ as well as the beloved, shouted singles “Let Your Body Learn” and “Murderous.” The band lost their way down the road, but this album remains a strong piece of work over two decades later. Amoeba Hollywood has used quantity of That Total Age in stock for just $7.99*.

Skinny Puppy's Last Rights Gets Deluxe Vinyl Treatment

Posted by Aaron Detroit, November 30, 2009 06:00pm | Post a Comment

Skinny Puppy
As of this month, fans of Industrial Godfathers Skinny Puppy (without
whom there would be no Marilyn Manson or Nine Inch Nails), will no longer have to shell out $200+ for the incredibly scarce vinyl edition of the band’s last (and arguably best) “classic-era” LP, Last Rights. This past August, the band polled their most rabid fans on Litany.net, asking which Puppy LP they’d most like to see reissued on vinyl. Last Rights won out as the fan favorite with nearly half of the vote, leading the band to strike a deal with their former label Nettwerk to reissue the album. The resultant release (out now) is lovingly repackaged with I, Braineater’s (AKA Jim Cummins) original artwork on a gatefold sleeve, while the audio itself has been mastered specifically for vinyl and spread across two LPs cut at 45rpm for maximum mental deranging. The package also includes a bonus CD of the entire album.

Last Rights still darkly stands out in the band's discography. It is both the band's most inaccessible and experimental album yet also its most devastingly beautiful. The band’s personal lives and health were in particularly bad states at the time of recording, with the members battling various drug problems. Puppy Vocalist Ogre, legendarily, was very much in the half-light of existence during the album’s recording. Held by the grip of a severe heroin addition, Ogre mostly forgoes his usual political lyrical bent and indeed sounds the part of a man exorcising a great many personal demons.
