New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Giorgio Moroder

Giorgio Moroder Amoeba What's In My Bag?

"There is America, there is England, and there is Sweden, and slowly they are taking over." You heard it here first folks: Sweden is taking over the US and England! Well, at least according to legendary producer/artist Giorgio Moroder, as he talks about the incredible musical talent coming from the Scandinavian country. Amoeba San Francisco, recently had the pleasure of hosting a signing of the disco/electronic-music pioneer's latest album, Deja Vu. Beforehand, the affable Moroder went record shopping at the store and shared his picks with us.

In 1966 Moroder began releasing singles under the name Giorgio, working in studios in Berlin and Munich before beginning a long and fruitful partnership with musician/producer Pete Bellotte and disco diva Donna Summer for her debut LP, Lady of the Night. A year later Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" became an international hit.

Giorgio Moroder Deja Vu

In 1978 Moroder began delving into film music, crafting original scores for FoxesAmerican GigoloCat People, and Scarface, among others. The following year he released his first solo album, E=MC². Over the course of much of the '90s and '00s, Moroder scored video games, films, and worked on assorted non-musical projects. In 2013, he contributed to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories album. His most recent album, Deja Vu, features guest vocalists Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Charli XCX, Sia, and Kelis. Moroder also DJs on the international circuit, with his next gig planned for summer 2016 in Paris.

Hip-Hoppers For Bernie Sanders

Posted by Billyjam, February 5, 2016 01:00pm | Post a Comment

Killer Mike, seen above with the Vermont senator whom he endorsed and has done a series of appearances and interviews with, may be the most visible hip-hop supporter of Democratic presidential runner Bernie Sanders. But the politically and socially conscious Run The Jewels emcee is not alone when it comes to hip-hop (and rock) artists who have shown support for the 74-year-old Vermont senator whose polls routinely show a large following among both young and minority voters. No wonder since Sanders routinely addresses topics that directly effect or at loudly resonate with the members of these oft ignored demographics. These include slashing the escalating high cost of college tuition, demilitarizing police departments across the US, remedying the uneven ratio of young black and Latino men incarcerated, rescheduling weed from a class A drug, and going after the (currently) entitled so-called 1% by making Wall Street accountable for its central role in the 2008 financial crash.

Other hip-hop artists to publicly put support behind Bernie include Berkeley's Lil B (The BasedGod), Stretch Armstrong, and  Z-Trip, who 8 years ago had endorsed Barack Obama, doing some speech remixes and teaming up with Shepard Fairey (another Bernie supporter). Scarface of Geto Boys fame believes in Bernie as does fellow Southern rap pioneer Bun B of UGK (RIP Pimp C). The Trill creator told the Miami New Times this week that Sanders gets his endorsement for being transparent. Some note Sanders' track record dating back to his college days when he fought for housing equality in Chicago.

Hip Hop Rap Up: RIP Wesley Burton, Mac Dre Art Show, Scarface Book, HBK's Azure, Big Mont, Third Sight IV LP + more

This Saturday evening's Mac Dre Art Show - Dre Area at at Charles Place in Downtown Oakland -  merely proves that the late great Vallejo rapper, whose cult status has grown exponetially since his murder eleven years ago, is truly an iconic hip-hop figure everywhere but especially in his native Bay Area. Dre Area features a total of 40 different artists, including Ernest Doty and Yung E, contributing via their art their take on Mac Dre - some of it inspired by Mac Dre's famous photos and album cover imagery. A one-off event happening this Saturday evening only from 5pm to midnight Dre Area (with all Mac Dre music being spun by DJ Dontdoodaat) takes place at Charles Place which is at 347 13th St. Oakland. Cover is $5 and I have a feeling it could get really packed and if so plan on going earlier than later.

Another beloved Bay Area public figure taken from this world and his family way too young is KPFA's Wesley Burton who, among other things at the Berkeley Pacifica station, co-hosted the popular late Friday night music show Sideshow Radio. However after finishing his show and leaving KPFA last Friday night / early Saturday morning while driving home to his family along Martin Luther King Boulevard in Oakland his car was struck a speeding hit-and-run driver that crashed into him causing Burton's car to flip and die at the scene.  A really well loved individual, tributes to him have included a moving one earlier this week hosted by Davey D during KPFA's Hard Knock Radio that is archived here for playback.
