Desolation Center Documentary Screenings in Hollywood, SF & Berkeley

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, September 9, 2019 07:55pm | Post a Comment

Desolation Center is the previously untold story of a series of early '80s guerrilla music and art Desolation Centerperformance happenings in Southern California that are recognized to have paved the way for Burning Man, Lollapalooza, and Coachella, collective experiences that have become key elements of popular culture in the 21st century. The feature documentary splices interviews and rare performance footage of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic, and more, documenting a time when pushing the boundaries of music, art, and performance felt almost like an unspoken obligation.

Directed by Stuart Swezey, the creator and principal organizer of these unique events, Desolation Center demonstrates how the risky, and at times even reckless, actions of a few outsiders can unintentionally lead to seismic cultural shifts. Combining Swezey’s exclusive access to never-before-seen archival video, live audio recordings, and stills woven together with new cinematically shot interviews, verité footage and animated sequences, Desolation Center captures the spirit of the turbulent times from which these events emerged.

Melvins What's In My Bag? episode at Amoeba Hollywood

We are incredibly stoked to share our 500th "What's In My Bag?" episode featuring the legendary Melvins!! Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and Steven McDonald recently visited us at Amoeba Hollywood to debate which is the best Rolling Stones record, talk about being influenced by The Runaways, and pick up albums by new artists The Lemon Twigs and Savoy Motel.

The Melvins formed in Montesano, WA in 1983, taking their name from a much-maligned supervisor at the Thriftway store where vocalist and guitarist Buzz Osborne worked as a clerk. As Melvins, he and drummer Dale Crover would go on to become underground legends, influencing the development of grunge, doom, and sludge. The band's 1986 debut EP, Six Songs (aka Melvins) was released as a vinyl 7". Their first studio full-length LP, Gluey Porch Treatments, was released in 1987 via Alchemy Records. With deep ties to the nascent grunge scene, Crover played drums on a Nirvana demo that would later become part of their Bleach LP.

Off!

Hardcore punk supergroup OFF! are known for their raucous, rowdy live shows, and they definitely brought their A-game when they swung by Amoeba Hollywood a couple months ago. Frontman Keith Morris (Circle Jerks/Black Flag), guitar player Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), bass player Steven Shane McDonald (Redd Kross) and drummer Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From The Crypt/Hot Snakes) tore through six short-but-sweet tracks which left the packed room wanting more.

This August, OFF! are gearing up for a US tour to promote their most recent release, Wasted Years. But this time the supergroup is getting even more super, with the addition of legendary Melvins drummer Dale Crover, who's filling in for Rubalcaba. Check out the two part video of OFF!'s performance at Amoeba Hollywood and get a glimpse of the mayhem brewing for the summer tour--just mentally Photoshop in Dale Crover.

Infamous punk rockers Dwarves will join the band for a handful of dates.
