Charity Auction with Don Barris at Amoeba Hollywood

Saturday at Amoeba Hollywood was the place to be! Our old friend and cohort, the incomparable Don Barris (Windy City Heat, Big 3 Podcast, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Ding Dong Show, and a tireless supporter of Amoeba's auctions), did the honors at the podium and hosted our charity auction for hurricane relief! Don was entertaining and hilarious, as always, with the sharp zingers, as well as the deadpan wily way he has of wrangling extra cash our of unsuspecting Saturday shoppers.

The items on the auction block were amazing and Don did a great job. He really drummed up the energy and he had everyone giggling under their breath or rollicking in the aisles as they threw up their rainbow auction paddles (which conveniently double as fans on the 90 degree day). People really got the jump on their holiday shopping by scoring some unique items!

All proceeds from Saturday's auction went directly to support hurricane relief efforts and, as always, Amoeba matched ALL winning bid amounts, which means double the money going to where it is most needed.

Here are just a few of the cool items we auctioned off:

  • Tickets to see The Breeders (SOLD OUT) show at the El Rey November 13th - $60.00
  • Tickets to see The Drums at The Fonda Theatre November 2nd - $80.00
  • Tickets to see Dhani Harrison at the El Rey November 30th - $45.00
  • Signed & framed Glen Campbell poster - $95.00
  • Neon Demon movie poster signed by Nicolas Winding Refn and Cliff Martinez - $20.00
  • David Lynch signed Twin Peaks soundtrack vinyl - $100.00
  • Pearl Jam collectible pack, including Third Man LP, patch and Vitalogy book - $120.00
  • New Orleans music pack, featuring a Tipitina's shirt, hand picked music from NOLA--commemorating our very first auction in September 2005 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast $80.00
  • Portable turntable + handpicked vinyl - $130.00
  • Lana Del Rey poster from her appearance at Amoeba with CD and buttons - $40.00
  • Signed HAIM poster + CD $30.00
  • Baby Driver soundtrack LP signed by Edgar Wright - $40.00

All together, Don helped raise a total of $840.00! That means, with the Amoeba match, we going to send $1,680.00 to Direct Relief, which has been providing medical and other aid to hurricane ravaged areas like Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas.

Amoeba Charity Auction for Planned Parenthood with Tawny Newsome

We sure had a great time at Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday! Our special guest auctioneer Tawny Newsome, musician and comedian and all around wonderful person, graced our stage and helped us raise close to $2,000 for our local Planned Parenthood chapter.

We had some outstanding prizes, and Tawny's relaxed style coaxed the audience into raising their auction paddles (which were actually Amoeba handheld fans, so they did double duty that hot day). Full of quips and one-liners, she had the audience chuckling--and she even got the shy people to join in!

Tawny Newsome is a Second City alum, actor (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$' "Chelsea Leight-Leigh") and a singer/guitarist. She was a touring member of Second City before joining the Mainstage cast and released a solo album in 2012. In 2013 Rolling Stone suggested Tawny for SNL's new cast. She moved from Chicago to LA about a year and a half ago where she's kept very busy. This October, Tawny is releasing her 4th album with Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers) which they recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio with original Muscle Shoals session players. They recorded the new album three days after last year's election with Tawny, John and their two band-mates flying to the town of 400. Four Lost Souls will be out on Bloodshot records September 22, with a tour starting that same month.

Charity Auction recap Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, June 3rd, we held a charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood with a brand new guest auctioneer, the dapper writer and comedian Jake Fogelnest! The auction, benefiting the Sierra Club, couldn't be more timely--with the issue of climate change on all of our minds. We are all hoping to protect our planet for generations to come, and the Sierra Club has been working tirelessly for more than a hundred years to do just that!

Sierra ClubThe Sierra Club was founded by legendary conservationist John Muir 125 years ago in 1892 and it's now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Its successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, they made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.

Our guest auctioneer knows a thing or two about music and pop culture. Jake started a television show, from his New York City bedroom, when he was 14-years old! Squirt TV made its debut in January of 1994 on Manhattan public access. The show featured Jake spouting off his opinions of music, film and television. Jake wrote, produced, directed and edited the entire series, himself. The one-man show quickly became a cult success in Manhattan. Jake's quirky style, sense of humor and edgy commentary attracted fans and Squirt TV evolved from Public Access to the mass audience of MTV. Jake latest projects include Comedy Central's upcoming series Corporate, Netflix's Girlboss, and Hulu's Difficult People.

Record Store Day 2017 at Amoeba Hollywood

After a very busy morning celebrating the tenth annual Record Store Day here at Amoeba Hollywood, the festivities were still going strong into the afternoon hours. We moved our remaining RSD exclusives (and the accompanying line) indoors, and the line snaked through the aisles. Inside the store, we had DJ sets from Harriet Brown (1pm), Gabby Moreno (3pm), and Cut Chemist (5pm). At 2pm, the legendary Seymour Stein of Sire Records and Warner Brothers fame joined us for a signing of the new Just Say 50 box set released for Record Store Day. We also had four very cool, limited edition RSD17 designs and our friends at Family Industries were here once again doing live silk screening on t-shirts and tote bags. And, of course, we gave of hundreds of free gift bags with purchase. Plus, today we released a new, limited edition Amoeba shirt!

Outside, the party continued! We were joined by LA Weekly, who gave out loads of cool schwag, and The Impossible Project, who set up an ultra cool Polaroid photo booth. Customers tried their luck with our prize wheel for $1 a spin; all proceeds benefit the Downtown Women's Center. Rene from Draw the Line Entertainment whipped up caricatures for kids and Weruva offered RSD-themed airbrush tattoos. (They also gave out samples of pet food.) Delicious Pizza was slinging slices for sale, and you could sample tasty (free) treats from Hubert's Lemonade and Body Factory. The Warner Bros. Truck was parked outside, offering complimentary ice cream and music treats.. At 5pm, we gave away some really nice speakers and headphones from Pioneer DJ

charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood with Martin Moreno

On Saturday, April 1st our guest auctioneer, comedian Martin Moreno, held the gavel with a firm hand as he auctioned off a cool array of fun stuff to benefit the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, which needs our help now more than ever. As Martin said "It is a great time to be brown in America!" (It was April 1st, right??)

Martin's comedy career began in his early 30s, and his twice-divorced take on "soul mates" and his personal journeys molded him into the hilarious, irreverent, badass standup comic he is today. He's co-hosted Comedy Central's Gabriel Iglesias Presents: Stand Up Revolution, voiced a character Hey, It's Fluffy!, and toured the U.S. and beyond gaining a loyal hardcore following. Catch him on Season 3 of Fluffy Breaks Even on FUSE in July with Gabriel Iglesias and follow him on Twitter: @martincomic.

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (or MALDEF for short) was founded in 1968 and is the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization. Often described as the “law firm of the Latino community,” MALDEF promotes social change through advocacy, communications, community education, and litigation in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, and political access. Their approach combines advocacy, educational outreach, and litigation strategies to achieve socio-economic change.

Here are some of the highlights and bids from today's auction:
