Amoeba Hollywood record store day

Amoeba Hollywood’s Record Store Day festivities continued on into this afternoon with awesome DJ sets, delicious food and RSD-themed activities. Read about the morning and watch our interview with the early bird collectors in line here. At noon, our friends from Family Industries started silk-screening special RSD 2015 designs onto tote bags and t-shirts, with the proceeds benefiting the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Starting at 1pm, some of our favorite Los Angeles-based musical artists got behind the turntables to provide the soundtrack for the day. Things kicked off with dream-pop duo Puro Instinct, who took to the decks to play a set of their favorite tunes in advance of their upcoming full-length release. Next up was Knxwledge (or KNX), a beatmaker whose Stones Throw debut drops on May 5. Across the street at Space15Twenty, a special TV on the Radio RSD Art Party kicked off, with guitar player Dave Sitek DJing while vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and Seeds artist Julian Gross drew caricatures. Also at Space15Twenty, Org Music and Shinola provided free Pabst Blue Ribbon, previews of RSD-exclusive titles and a rousing set from Mike Watt + the Secondmen and EvKain.

Local Stuff: Ariel Pink, Ty Segall, Puro Instinct, LOL Boys, Starred, Soft Pack

Posted by Billy Gil, July 13, 2012 02:29pm | Post a Comment
So much West Coast goodness coming our way this week, I’ll just get right into it …
New Ariel Pink – “Only In My Dreams”
Ariel Pink debuted a new song this week from his upcoming Mature Themes, the regal-sounding “Only In My Dreams.” Loved the “Baby” cover, but it’s great to hear that his new originals are great, too. Mature Themes is due Aug. 17 on 4AD.

New Ty Segall Coming — Again
Won’t I ever shut up abou this guy? Not when he’s making such great music so consistently. On the heels of his White Fence collab Hair and his searing Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse comes a new album just credited to the king of SF garage himself, called Twins. It’s out Oct. 9 on Drag City. The next time he’s close to this neck of the woods is Oct. 14, at the Treasure Island Festival.
New Puro Instinct – “Dream Lover”
Speaking of Mr. Pink, his friends in dreamy duo Puro Instinct have a new song, “Dream Lover.” It’s not a Mariah Carey cover, although I bet that would sound amazing. This song finds them branching out, getting bigger than the sound they debuted on Headbangers in Ecstasy. Sounds like My Bloody Valentine by the pool. It’ll be on an EP later this year.

LOL Boys – “Changes” [ft. Heart Streets]
Originally hailing from Montreal, these guys make sort of lo-fi jazzy house music. And they are called LOL Boys, which is pretty good, although I feel like it should have been LOL Boyz. I’m pretty bewildered by the whole thing in a good way. Their debut Changes is out July 17.

starredStarred – “No Good”
Now this is where it’s at — hazy L.A. acoustic rock from Brooklyn transplant Liza Thorn and cohort Matt Koshak. Thorn used to be in a band called Curls with now former (WTF??) Girls frontman Christopher Owens, which might give you a clue as to the duo’s pop songwriting chops. “No Good” is just all kinds of good, touching those sweet spots for which we usually turn to the likes of Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Cowboy Junkies, some Cocteau Twins and Dum Dum Girls. Check it out at Pitchfork. I really can’t wait to hear more Starred. A 7” of “No Good” is promised sometime in 2012 from Pendu Sound, which also has their spacier track “Cemetery” up to stream.

New Soft Pack – “Saratoga”
One of our favorite local bands The Soft Pack are coming back with a long-awaited second album called Strapped, due Sept. 25 on Mexican Summer. “Saratoga” moves quickly with gauzy noise that seems to erupt everywhere, like the best half-remembered night of your life. It’s a classic indie rock rev-up jam, like The Walkmen’s “The Rat” or Broken Social Scene’s “Almost Crimes.”

Shows This Weekend:
Friday: Sonny & the Sunsets, Wet Illustrated, The Blank Tapes @ The Echo (8:30 p.m., $8)
Saturday: Viva Pomona with La Sera, Grass Widow, So Many Wizards, Tijuana Panthers and more @ The Glass House (5 p.m., $14)
Sunday: Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration with Triple Chicken Foot, Rod Melancon, Son Ark @ The Echo (5 p.m., FREE)

out this week 2/22 & 3/1...puro instinct!

This is really turning out to be a great year for music! So many fantastic albums are right around the corner. We will have new albums by The Strokes and James Blake on March 22nd; New Radiohead and Pains of Being Pure at Heart albums out March 29th; New Fleet Foxes album out May 3rd! And these last couple of weeks have also had some amazing albums come out. The new Adele record is fantastic, if you like that kind of thing! New records also were released last week from Toro Y Moi and Puro Instinct. I have been obsessed with Puro Instinct for a while now, but more on that later.

The new album by Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher and Andy Bell from Oasis, is out this week. You may also know Andy Bell from Ride! I was never a huge Oasis fan -- I was always more of a Blur guy -- but for some reason I am excited about this album. There is also a new EP out from The Dum Dum Girls this week. Have you heard their album, I Will Be, from last year yet? You need to. Like, right now! The new Lykke Li album is also out this week. I honestly never really paid her much attention when her last album came out but this new one is great! I seriously did not think that I would be liking it but it somehow cast a spell over me. The new Dustin O'Halloran album is also fantastic. It is more indie classical music from Fat Cat, the label that brought us Max Richter. There is so much to listen to! I know everyone is all excited about the new Lady Gaga and I just found out the single will be out as a 12" for Record Store Day, which is also right around the corner, on Saturday, April 16th. There are tons of great exclusive 7"s and 12"s coming out this year, but what I have been really excited about is the new album by Puro Instinct. I can't get enough of this band...

I have been obsessed with Puro Instinct for a while now after becoming an instant fan once I saw them open up for Ariel Pink last year. They were known as Pearl Harbour before thankfully changing their name to Puro Instinct. I think the first time I actually heard them was at this show. They sounded like some 90's shoegaze band but they also had a distinct sort of 70s Los Angeles feel to them and they also reminded me of Fleetwood Mac. I was hooked. Imagine Cocteau Twins mixed with Puro Instinct Headbangers in EcstasyFleetwood Mac! They had some albums out on LP and just released Stilyagi as a 7" not too long ago but I was waiting patiently for this debut album. Mexican Summer just released Headbanger in Ecstasy last week and it totally delivered me exactly what I needed. The album is wispy, dreamy and a little bit spooky. It's similar to Cocteau Twins in that I have no idea what they are singing about yet I can't help but sing along all the time -- like last night in my car, even though I realized that I didn't know any of the words. I have no idea what they are singing yet the songs are crazy catchy. I really do love this album. I will need to sit down and look over the lyrics so I can actually figure out what they are saying, though it really doesn't matter. It's really all about the music and the sort of mood and feeling I get when I listen to this album cause it just puts me in the perfect mood. I hope you also get some Puro Instinct in your life soon! I think you need it.
