Final Round in 2019 DMC US Regional Battle Series, Exemplified High Level DJ Skills & Evolvement of Regionals in DMC History

The final US 2019 DMC Regional DJ Battle in advance of the upcoming 2019 DMC US Finals, that was held recently in the Bay Area, exemplified two major points. First it demonstrated just how much the level of turntablism skills has steadily risen over the decades in the prestigious long running DJ battle organization that formed way back in the (pre-digital era) 1980's. Secondly the 2019 DMC Bay Area Regional, held at the Uptown in Oakland on May 26th (where the 2019 DMC US Scratch Finals were also held), spotlighted the progressive changes to the meaning of “Regional” DMC DJ battles; in an age when air travel has become relatively cheap and competitors are hungrier than ever for a chance to qualify for a coveted slot in the DMC US Finals; happening September 8th 2019 in Denver CO.

Traditionally limited to competitors from corresponding geographic regions, the modern era US DMC Regionals have a distinctly more national flavor as they routinely feature out of state competitors alongside local turntable talent.

Skratchpad Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary With Big Skratch DJ Concert & Battle Tonight In San Francisco

Posted by Billyjam, August 8, 2013 02:04pm | Post a Comment
Tonight, Thursday August 8th, Skratchpad celebrates its ten year anniversary with a big scratch DJ party at Neck of The Woods at 408 Clement in San Francisco. Yes a full whole decade has passed since that unassuming foggy San Francisco night back in 2003 at Sublounge (20th Street off Third St in the Dogpatch district) when DJs Deeandroid and Celskiii and a group of fellow turntablist enthusiast DJ friends initiated  what would go on to become the leading (and only) regular  monthly DJ scratch session party in the entire San Francisco Bay Area. Been that the Bay Area, long considered the epicenter of the scratch DJ movement, was without any other regular club destination for those who love turntablism to go to perform at and/or enjoy others perform at soon solidified Skratchpad's reputation as being a very special place. Over the decade Skratchpad has relocated a few times around San Francisco venues - from  long gone Sublounge to Azul to The Cellar to its current location on Clement Street, Rockit Room, now known as Neck Of The Woods - all the while providing (and always no cover charge) an appreciated oasis for fans and participants of the scratch arts to gather and share in their somewhat marginalized hip-hop musical art form. Skratchpad is all done out of a shared love of the art form of skratch DJ as proven by the always free club's mission statement mantra of "No Cover, Just Culture"  plus a commitment to providing each month "Q & A Skratch Sessions// Party Rockin// Monthly Guest Showcases// Beats // with Prize Raffles & Giveaways."

"A Community Event" - DJ Cue on Sunday's 2013 San Francisco DMC Regional DJ Battle

Posted by Billyjam, April 25, 2013 11:45am | Post a Comment
The renaissance in the turntable arts and all it entails, including skratch music and hip-hop DJ battles, that began in the past couple of years - following a bit of a lull for close to a decade - continues its resurgence in San Francisco this weekend when, for the second year in a row after a noticeable six year absence, the prestigious DMC (now celebrating 30 years) DJ battle returns for a Bay Area regional battle. And considering that the Bay Area has long been viewed as one of the main epicenters of turntable culture and battle-DJing this is a most welcome return.

"We're excited for this one," said veteran San Francisco DJ/producer DJ Cue who as well as working behind the scenes will also be a special performer at the event. The 2013 DMC San Francisco Regional Battle takes place on Sunday afternoon/evening (April 28th) at Neck Of The Woods on Clement Street in The City. For his anticipated performance DJ Cue will be joined onstage by his longtime turntable crew partner DJ Quest who two decades ago, along with Eddie Def, formed the legendary San Francisco turntablist crew the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters (BPSH). At that time the BPSH crew made history by releasing the first DJ battle record, Hamster Breaks, something no doubt that will be on DJ Cue's mind on Sunday.
"I would say that this year marks a good twenty one years now that the Bay DJ's have been really solidly in the battle scene. Hamster Breaks came out twenty years ago. Invisbl Skratch Piklz won DMC twenty one years ago. And the DJ's from here have been strong ever since. Our history is strong here and we are together supporting the event and forward movement of the battle scene and to wherever it goes," said the Bay Area proud DJ Cue who is also one of the organizers of this weekend's event which he describes as a true group/community effort.
