10 music gift ideas

Got a tween or teenager’s to shop for? Looking to expand their musical horizons? Check out some of our music recommendations!

If they like Nicki Minaj or Iggy Azalea, check out Shamir’s Ratchet.

shamirLike Ms. Minaj, Shamir can sing, rap and makes dance music with a healthy dose of sass. Shamir’s androgynous style speaks to how kids are throwing out old notions of gender and stereotypes, thanks to teen idols like Miley Cyrus taking that bull by the horns. But Shamir’s lyrics are actually a lot less raunchy than either Minaj’s or Cyrus’, making him a better choice for younger teens.

If they like Lana Del Rey (and speak Spanish), check out Carla Morrison’s Amor Supremo.

Flaming Lips To Release "7 Skies H3" CD & "Sgt. Pepper's" Tribute LP with guests including Sean Lennon, Miley Cyrus, and Moby

In addition to the CD version of their album 7 Skies H3 (previously a 2011 Record Store Day limited vinyl release) that will arrive in Amoeba next week (May 19th) the always busy / Beatles-loving, three decades strong Oklahoma band The Flaming Lips  are planning on releasing later this year their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band tribute album to be entitled, With A Little Help From My Fwends, that Warner Brothers will release on October 28th - coming 47 years after the original Fab Four release in June 1967. As well as being a nod to the Beatles' lyrics the tribute album title "With A Little Help From My Fwends" is a reference to the album's guest spots from some of their friends or "fwends" rather.

These guests will include (Lips side project) the Electric Würms, MGMT, Sean Lennon, MMJ, Foxygen, Phantogram, plus Miley Cyrus and Moby who both collaborate on the lead single / track "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds." That digital only (for now) advance single/track will also be a benefit release with a portion of funds raised to be donated to The Bella Foundation in Oklahoma City; a non-profit organization based in the band's hometown  that assists low-income, elderly or terminally ill pet owners with the cost of veterinary care. For more music and news on the Lips visit both the The Flaming Lips page on the Amoeba store, and the band's website. Below is a fan made video of the band along with Miley Cyrus performing the aforementioned "Lucy" at a concert in Manchester two months ago.

New York State of Mind Amoeblog #75: Old vs New NYC, WTC B.A.S.E. Jump View, Frankie Knuckles R.I.P., Danny Brown in New York +

The above video, produced by the pro-walking for health City Walk series, is a mix of new New York City plus a century old New York City - back in 1901 when the sidewalks were wider than the actual street in the middle. The 113 year old NYC footage was filmed by the Thomas Edison Company and culled by the folks at City Walk, whose goal is to encourage Americans to walk more and utilize their communities in the best possible way with respect to the environment. Compared to today this footage is from a much simpler and more peaceful time in New York City. I say this after last week's most unsettling statement from President Barack Obama who said that stopping "a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan" is the US's top security concern. Say what? He sure caught my attention, and I'm sure everyone else who lives in New York City, not to mention those planning on visiting New York.  I could almost hear the clicks of tourists cancelling their planned trips to the Big Apple.

Even 13 years after 9/11 New Yorkers are still jittery and this type of statement from the commander in chief sure doesn't help. And neither did the news, also last week, of how easy it was for the B.A.S.E. jumpers to break into the site of  almost finished 1 World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) building to make their jump, and in so doing demonstrating just how poor security is even at the site of 9/11. Meanwhile the stunning video of that B.A.S.E. jump, which took place back in September but was only published last week, is below. Adding further proof that homeland security, at the very place where it should be at its highest, is below par was with another news story last week about a 16 year-old New Jersey youth who easily managed to break into 1 World Trade Center, bypass security (who were asleep), and make his way up to the top of 104th floor of the building.  "I walked around the construction site and figured out how to access the Freedom Tower rooftop. I found a way up through the scaffolding, climbed onto the sixth floor, and took the elevator up to the 88th floor. I then took the staircase up to 104th floor," the teen told police after getting arrested.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Sky Ferreira

Sky Ferreira

Sky Ferreira is quickly becoming pop culture's it girl. Ferreira can be seen on the silver screen flexing her acting chops, showing off her modeling skills on runways and in print, or you can catch Sky rocking arenas opening up for the Miley Cyrus Bangerz tour. The girl does it all. At just 21 years of age, Sky Ferreira is on her way up the super stardom ladder. A quick Google search will yield pictures of her next to celebrities like Kanye West and Frank Ocean. Her debut full-length album, Night Time, My Time (Capitol), peaked at #15 on Billboard's US Digital Albums Chart and is available now in our stores and at Amoeba.com.

Sky Ferreira

Sky Ferreira recently performed at Amoeba Hollywood in support of Night Time, My Time, and stuck around for a little shopping. She hung out with our camera crew and shared her findings for another awesome episode of What's in My Bag?. Sky starts things off with the 1996 drama, Freeway, telling the story of being a kid and watching a rented VHS copy when her mom wasn't looking! She also picks up Angel Olsen's latest album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, on vinyl and talks about the classic folk record, Parallelograms, by Linda Perhacs. See which electronica artist Sky is a big fan of and check out the giant sized poster she finds. Very cool stuff!

Show Recap: Sky Ferreira at Amoeba Hollywood

A line stretched around the block Feb. 19 to see Sky Ferreira play at Amoeba Hollywood. Walking out looking like some starlet from a Gregg Araki movie in a leather jacket, plaid schoolgirl skirt, sunglasses and a goofy cap, Ferreira exuded oddball, outsider charm as she lauched into a handfull of tracks from her excellent debut album, Night Time, My Time. She started with the Janet Jackson-meets-Zola Jesus style "24 Hours," a highlight of the album that perfectly captures her melancholy, hedonistic youth aesthetic. Following was "Ain't Your Right," with its gender-bending lyrics and industrial beat. "You're Not the One" let Ferreira show off her smoky, soaring vocals. Ferreira looked like she was having a great time, giggling and throwing a water bottle into the crowd, and decided to stay for one more song, pulling out a surprise with early breakthrough single "Everything Is Embarrassing," from the Ghost EP. For those of us who didn't get to see her open for Miley Cyrus, the show felt like a special treat, a glimpse of an emerging talent on the verge of exploding.
