There were lots of soundtrack releases to choose from this year, with many limited edition color vinyl versions creating excitement and selling out extremely fast. Two members of Radiohead make appearances on this list, and we also have two soundtracks for the same film franchise -- the original film and its later update. Music for television is becoming popular too, and we have 2 such soundtracks on our list.

Guillermo del Toro's lush fantasy romanceThe Shape of Water won big at the 2018 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat. It's no surprise that this soundtrack made our top 20 best selling soundtacks of the year.

Radiohead's 'A Moon Shaped Pool' Out June 17, Up for Preorder

Radiohead recently revealed a couple of new songs and then promptly dropped information on the release of their ninth album, A Moon Shaped Pool, which will come out June 17 on LP, limited color vinyl and CD. You can preorder from Amoeba now.

Here's a breakdown of what recently went down in the world of Radiohead. First, the band deleted its online presence May 1, leading to speculation about a new album. Then, May 3, the band released a new single and stop-motion animation video, "Burn the Witch," which you can watch below. Then, May 6, the band released another video, from The Master director Paul Thomas Anderson, for the song "Daydreaming." Both songs feature a symphonic sound more in line with guitarist Jonny Greenwood's recent soundtrack work and less like the more digital sound found on the last Radiohead album, The King of Limbs, as well as Thom Yorke's solo work and supergroup project, Atoms for Peace. Then the album was released digitally over this past weekend, and the band announced details for the physical album, which brings us up to speed.

You might not recognize his name, but Krzysztof Penderecki has soundtracked many a nightmare. The Polish, avant-garde composer was wildly inventive (and controversial) when his compositions first gained notoriety in the late ’50s, and thus his jarring compositions, featuring such innovative techniques as clustering tones, and such foreboding titles as “Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima,” came to be used by wildly inventive and controversial film directors, from William Friedkin’s The Exorcist to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and Inland Empire. Meanwhile, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood writes response pieces to both “Therenody” and “Polymorphia,” and his moody, solemn orchestral pieces serve as a terrific foil to Penderecki’s terror-inducing works.
