Ice Cube
, pictured above at his Amoeba Hollywood in-store meet-and-greet in celebration of his new album Everythangs Corrupt, appears in two year in review lists including under in Best of 2018 Hip-Hop Pt 4 in the Top 10 Veteran Hip-Hop Acts category as well as in the Top 35 Albums list below on this Best of Hip-Hop Pt 2 Amoeblog.  Also below is this more commercially popular Best of 2018 are most streamed artist, top five most Googled artists, and the ten top money earning hip-hop artists of the past year. And what a year it was for the genre; one that thrives on different levels. On one end of the hip-hop spectrum there's legions of underground emcees and producers toiling away in near obscurity, while on the other end popular hip-hop artists are omnipresent pop cultural figures. Hence in 2018 when Cardi B and Nicki Minaj got into a fight at Fashion week, or when Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose, or when XXXTentacion was murdered in Miami, these all became mainstream stories reported alongside the political news headlines of the day.

Amoeba SF & Berkeley's Top 10 Most Amazing In-store Performances of 2017!

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, December 31, 2017 04:54pm | Post a Comment

By Brent James

Amoeba’s live shows and events are the icing on an already impressive cake, and anyone who’s ever been to one can attest to the energy, excitement, and pure feeling of community they bring! We here in SF have noticed listening parties have started to become popular, as well as good old-fashioned “meet and greets” and album signings. 2018 is already looking like a banner year for our in-stores. To hold you over, here’s a look back at the most thrilling shows of the past year!

10. Summer of Love Celebrations - Amoeba SF - June 10 & July 28, 2017
Has it only been 50 years?? Well, we had no shortage of celebrations this past Summer to answer that question and pay tribute to the most tumultuous and artistic eras ever! And it all happened RIGHT HERE. We had 30 ft. projection screens, flowers in our hair, great local food, and, most important, the MUSIC that fueled a VERY different San Francisco.

9. Matisyahu - Amoeba SF - Thursday, May 25 2017
The return of Matisyahu to the Amoeba SF stage saw a much more relaxed set this time around. In support of the amazing Undercurrent, we had a sweet little weeknight show that, if I recall, came with perfect San Francisco weather. It’s always a pleasure to host Matis.

8. Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Amoeba Berkeley - August 4, 2017
One of the first acts to test the boards of the revamped Berkeley stage, CRB brought the house down with an acoustic set that could be felt all the way around the world. Guest guitarist Neal Casal was on hand to add to the magic!

1: Oddisee The Iceberg (MMG/Fat Beats) (2017)

Each year in the second half of March, with Record Store Day just weeks away, record labels traditionally have kicked into full gear with a non-stop flow of releases coming out. And this year is no exception with some incredible hip-hop being released by big and small labels on both vinyl and CD and increasingly more on cassette too. Check out the recent Amoeblog on boutique label Get On Down's exclusive Record Store Day (April 22nd 2017) releases that includes an informative interview with Papa D who is one of the partners of the label that's an imprint of Traffic Entertainment. Peep and/or download as PDF the full list of Record Store Day 2017 releases (hip-hop and beyond) here. Meantime new releases to arrive into Amoeba this week include Washington DC super-talent Oddisee' latest full-length release The Iceberg.  Again from Mello Music Group (MMG), who just last year released both Oddisee' Alwasta EP his The Odd Tape album, this latest is a dual release with Fat Beats under their MMG/Fat Beats combo which we can assume means that there is a vinyl version coming soon. Clocking in at just under 48 minutes The Iceberg's 14 tracks include the song "NNGE" that features album guest Toine. See the new accompanying music video below.

2) Big Freedia Just Be Free (Queen Diva)

3) Danny Brown Hot Soup (Street Corner Music)

4) 9th Wonder The Wonder Years (T.e.g.)

5) G-Eazy  These Things Happen (BPG)

Locking down the number chart position this week at Amoeba Hollywood is not an album but a 7" single: the excellent, collector's item, picture disc single, via Stones Throw, from Madlib alter-ego Quasimoto (aka Lord Quas) "Planned Attack" / Talkin' Shit" The side "Planned Attack" is culled from the album Yessir Whatever while the "Talkin Shit" side is a short, previously unreleased track with both featuring and produced by Madlib, artwork by Jeff Jank, and described by the Peanut Butter Wolf headed label as "Quasimoto X-ray record.  Half picture disc, half clear vinyl. Lord Quas with brick on one side, and his "insides" show on the flip.  Delivered in a clear polybag." Also charting are Oakland rapper G-Eazy's major label debut  These Things Happen (BPG), 9th Wonder's The Wonder Years (which has been out for a minute but is a chart re-entry), and the ever-prolific and talented Danny Brown's Hot Soup on Street Corner Music - a reissue of his mixtape from 2008.
