Only In Hollywood Fest Takes Over Nov. 5-8

The inaugural Only in Hollywood Music and Arts Festival will take over the Hollywood area for four days, from Nov. 5-8.

Featuring more than 100 performances, the festival will hit various venues in the area, including Amoeba Hollywood. On Thursday, Nov. 5, we’ll have a live  in-store performance with Stones Throw Records signee Mild High Club at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, electro star Egyptian Lover will spin at Amoeba at 7 p.m., in celebration of his new double-vinyl album, 1984. And on Sunday, Nov. 8, we’ll have DJs from Web radio collective Dublab spinning in-store from 2-4 p.m. As always, all of Amoeba’s events are free and all-ages.

Mild High Club is the moniker of Alexander Brettin, whose spacey psych-pop has graced the same stages as like-minded artists such as Ariel Pink, R. Stevie Moore and Silk Rhodes. Check out the Beatlesesque “Windowpane,” taken from the recently-released debut album, Timeline (on LP or CD).

Levitt Pavilion Shows Feature Robben Ford, El Vez and Los Lobos in Mid-September

Amoeba will be on hand at for three free, all-ages shows at Levitt Pavilion this September. The shows start at 8 p.m., and festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., with food, children’s activities and more. Join us at the Amoeba booth before the shows and spin the prize wheel to win some cool swag.

robben fordFirst up on Sept. 10 is five-time Grammy-nominated musician Robben Ford. The blues, jazz and rock guitarist and songwriter has collaborated with such artists as Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Kiss and more. Musician Magazine named Ford one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 2oth Century.” His latest album is called Into the Sun. Watch an album trailer below.

el vezOn Sept. 11, Chicano rocker El Vez takes the stage. Blending Americana and Mexican styles, he channels Elvis Presley but with a Latin twist. His latest release is God Save The King: 25 Years Of El Vez 1988-2013. Watch a feature on El Vez below.

Mariachi-Metal Hybrid Metalachi Takes the Stage at Levitt Pavillion For Free Show Aug. 14

Boasting the most unique combination of genres we've heard of in some time, mariachi-metal rockers Metalachi will play at Levitt Pavillion in Los Angeles Friday, August 14 as part of their summer concert series.

The show is free and all-ages. Doors are at 6:30 p.m., and music begins at 8. Come by early, grab a bite from places like Pupusas Y Mas, D's Tacos and Tomski Sausage, and swing by the Amoeba booth to give our Prize Wheel a spin.

Playing versions of Metallica and Black Sabbath songs on trumpets on violins, Metalachi are a must-see for any metal fan or mariachi enthusiast. The band, originally from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, has been featured on Buzzfeed and has performed Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" on "America's Got Talent." Yuna Comes to Grand Performances For Free Concert Sept. 6

Malaysian-born pop singer Yuna will appear at Grand Performances in Downtown L.A. Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. The show is free. Amoeba is proud to be a sponsor of the event. It’s hosted by KCRW’s Raul Campos. Come say hi at our booth and spin our prize wheel.

Yuna combines worldbeat touches with stunning acoustic guitar and Western pop melodies on albums like Nocturnal. Hear Yuna’s voice soar over a clap-along beat on “Rescue” for a taste:

Grand Performances Show Celebrates Civil Rights Movement With Les Nubians and More Aug. 2

Grand Performances, a series of free shows put on at California Plaza in Downtown L.A., will host People Get Ready: A Soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. Amoeba is a proud sponsor of the event. We’ll be on hand with a booth and our prize wheel, so come by and say hello.

Les Nubians

The show features such artists as Les Nubians, Dwight Trible, Dexter Story, Ejyptian Queen, Godfrey at Large and more performing new renditions of anthems in a celebration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The performance is produced by Jonathan Rudnick and Dexter Story, who previously produced Celebrations of Peace Go With You Gil for Gil Scott-Heron and Young Gifted & Nina for Nina Simone. It’s hosted by KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez.

California Plaza is located at 350 South Grand Avenue. There’s a complimentary bike valet on the upper plaza for those on two wheels.
