1: Freddie GIbbs You Only Live 2wice vinyl EP (ESGN)

2: Funky DL Autonomy: The 4th Quarter 2 (Washington Classics)

3: Gensu DeanWise Intelligent G.o.D. (Mello Music Group)

4: Blacastan & Stu Bangas  The Uncanny Adventures Of Watson & Holmes  (Brick Records)

5: Slum Village Vol. O (Nestra Music Group)

The current top five is topped by the latest (new to vinyl) from the acclaimed hip-hop artist Freddie GIbbs: You Only Live 2wice on ESGN. Initially released two months ago, but now new on vinyl, 2wice is billed as an EP, but the eight track release clocks in at 32 minutes and features eight tracks. These include such tracks by the Gary, Indiana artist  as "Crushed Glass,"  "Phone Lit," "Amnesia" and "20 Karat Jesus."   Gibbs, who along with Ice-T was featured on the brand new EP release Late Night Blvd from $kinny, made headlines in recent weeks when he appeared on the premiere of the Viceland reality show The Therapist that features various celebrities sitting down with Los Angeles therapist Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh to candidly discuss traumatic events and personal experiences.  In the Gibbs interview he openly  discussed his experience from two years ago when, in Austria, he accused of rape and later arrested and jailed and facing a possible ten years in prison. He talks about this case, of which he was acquitted back in September, and how it made him question a lot in his life and give up doing music altogether which, as proven by his 2017 release 2wice, he did not.

rapist. The show features Los Angeles therapist Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh talking with various rappers and other celebrities about traumatic events and deep psychological wounds.

Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, Gangsta Gibbs is Back with Another One

Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs is back to gift us another album. Gibbs' new release, Shadow of a Doubt, Freddie Gibbs "Shadow of a Doubt"was dropped with his label ESGN, but it might not be what you’d expect if you’ve only heard his last project.

Gibbs' last album, Pinata, was released in 2014 and made just about every music reviewer’s albums of the year list. Produced by Stones Throw super-producer Madlib, Pinata has a more traditional hip-hop sound with brilliant and soulful sampling. Pinata received unanimously positive reviews, but Gibbs is not softening up in the slightest for his most recent release.

Shadow of a Doubt comes across as a more contemporary hip-hop album with its fairly ‘trap’ style production. Shadow of a Doubt features beats from Boi-1da, Tarentino of 808 Mafia, and KAYTRANADA, all of whom are considered popular and reputable producers this year. Gibbs is one of the few rappers out with the prowess to excel in many different styles. This album exemplifies Gibbs’ capability to do what all of mainstream hip-hop is doing, but simply do it better.

Album Picks: Freddie Gibbs, Club 8

Freddie Gibbs - Shadow Of A Doubt

We’ve been waiting for Freddie Gibbs’ new album since his gritty vocals graced last year’s Pinata, his dynamite collaboration with Madlib. And he doesn’t disappoint—Gibbs’ latest is a contender for underground rap album of the year. Over a digital bounce, Gibbs establishes his powerful presence early on with “Fuckin’ Up the Count” (“Gangsta shit in my DNA, I just can’t explain that/Even if I die tell my enemies I remain that”). His collaboration with Black Thought proves inspired on “Extradite,” as Mikhail’s beat blends ’70s soul with “Twilight Zone” organs while Gibbs and Black Thought’s words spill out like rolling dice. Like similarly great albums released this year by Earl Sweatshirt and Vince Staples, Shadow of a Doubt is grim but enlivening—seek the hard-hitting “Packages” as proof. Gibbs is the quintessential thirtysomething rapper who’s toiled in the underground only to see younger guys get the glory—if there’s any justice, Shadow of a Doubt should make that a thing of the past.
