Final Round in 2019 DMC US Regional Battle Series, Exemplified High Level DJ Skills & Evolvement of Regionals in DMC History

The final US 2019 DMC Regional DJ Battle in advance of the upcoming 2019 DMC US Finals, that was held recently in the Bay Area, exemplified two major points. First it demonstrated just how much the level of turntablism skills has steadily risen over the decades in the prestigious long running DJ battle organization that formed way back in the (pre-digital era) 1980's. Secondly the 2019 DMC Bay Area Regional, held at the Uptown in Oakland on May 26th (where the 2019 DMC US Scratch Finals were also held), spotlighted the progressive changes to the meaning of “Regional” DMC DJ battles; in an age when air travel has become relatively cheap and competitors are hungrier than ever for a chance to qualify for a coveted slot in the DMC US Finals; happening September 8th 2019 in Denver CO.

Traditionally limited to competitors from corresponding geographic regions, the modern era US DMC Regionals have a distinctly more national flavor as they routinely feature out of state competitors alongside local turntable talent.

Hip-Hop July 14 2017: Fresh Kid Ice, DJ Shadow, Brian Coleman, Shabazz Palaces, Missy Elliot, Mr. Lif, The Roots, Ozomatali +

The Roots, who did a killer Amoeba Hollywood in-store a decade ago, headline a Bay Area show tonight at the Fox Theater. (2 Chainz will be at the same Uptown Oakland district venue on August 14th).  Just a couple of blocks nearby in this vibrant nightlife section of the East Bay city is another excellent show. At the New Parish tonight will be the "collective of Black-Chicano-Cuban-Japanese-Jewish-Filipino musicians" Ozomatali headlining a bill with Pasto Seco Band plus local longtime emcee El Kool Kyle. Yes, it's mid summer and therefore there's lots of great hip-hop events going on in the East Bay in both Oakland and Berkeley, as well as across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. That's where The Roots' hardest working member, drummer and busy DJ Questlove will be jetting over to after his Oakland show tonight to do a DJ set at San Francisco's The Independent on Divisidaro following a set by DeeJay Theory. Speaking of deejays Bay Area legend DJ Shadow over past week unexpectedly dropped the impromptu (digital) 4 song EP The Mountain Has Fallen which is a sequel to his summer 2016 album The Mountain Will Fall (also on LP/vinyl). He'll no doubt be performing from both releases when he brings his ongoing tour this weekend to Berkeley's UC Theatre on Sunday July 16th with Bay Area turntablist DJ Teeko opening. Next month show to look forward to: Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, and Brother Ali all play Berkeley's Greek Theatre on August 22nd.

DJ Traps Wins 2013 SF Regional DMC Battle

DJ Traps working his winning routine @ last night's 2013 San Franciso Regional DMC DJ Battle

Proving that you really can make lemonade out of lemons DJ Traps - last night's winner of the  2013 San Francisco Regional DMC DJ Battle - shared during his acceptance speech that his personal life had not been going so good lately but that, via his craft, he had managed to turn all that negativity into something positive. "I been through a lot of shit recently," admitted the winner of the prestigious DJ battle without going into detail. "But I took it all out here," he said gesturing towards the two turntable and mixer set up on which he had just done his stunning six minute winning routine of the heated, high caliber DJ battle.

The competition - the second annual Bay Area DMC Regional in a row after a noticeable six year gap of any DMC battles in the Bay - was a fun and talent-packed turntable competition that was as much a DJ battle as it was a reunion and gathering of Bay Area hip-hop DJs of the past few decades. In addition to young DJ cats like Santa Rosa competitor DJ Lazy Boy (aka Gregory The Great) there were OG Bay Area DJs like DJ Apollo, Pos Red, DJ Quest, and QBert who all started out in the 80's as well as next generation DJs like Teeko, Snayk Eyez, and Golden Chyld who arrived on the scene in the 90's. The whole event, that ran from mid afternoon into the evening at Neck of The Woods on Clement St. in San Francisco, exuded good vibes and a shared love by all in the house for hip-hop DJ'ing and scratch music. DJ Lazy Boy, who placed third in the competition, said during his acceptance speech onstage with DJ Apollo - the MC of the night - that he had grown up listening to the Triple Threat DJ crew (the Bay Area supergroup featuring Apollo along with Shortkut and Vin Roc - another one of the night's judges) and that he used to practice his DJing to, using routines done by Apollo as his template, noting that "it was an honor" to now be onstage alongside his turntable hero.

Following a great warm up set by Mista B, who dug deep in his crates to spin lots of old school and golden era classics (Grandmaster Flash + Furious Five featuring Melle Mel, Run DMC, Audio Two, etc.) plus a bunch of throwbacks from the Bay Area including IMP/Cougnut and Rated X/C-Funk, the SF DMC battle started with the first round of each of eight DJs doing two minute routines.
