As the new year is less new and the weeks/months have quickly slipped by leaving us in the second half of March 2017, we are back into the annual DJ battle season. And tonight in New York City one of themost important turntable showdowns (and typically first of the Regional DMCs) takes place with the 2017
DMC NYC Regional DJ Battle. The battle winner tonight will in turn face off against the winners from all
the upcoming Regional USA DMC battle winners in the summer 2017 USA battle. That winner (last year it was DJ Traps - left) will go on to rep the US in the 2017 DMC World Championships held in London in approx six months from now. This year taking place at the new location of the Highline Ballroom in the Chelsea district of Manhattan the NYC DMC Regional will feature an impressive list of registered battle DJs: some of whom could be future stars.. This evening's 6pm to 11pm event features a nice balance of new and seasoned turntablists battling it out on the ones and twos (full list below) plus impressive showcase and party rockin' sets from DJ Shiftee and DJ Nelson. And who knows, maybe the event's always entertaining and multi-talented host Lord Finesse might do an impromptu DJ performance as the veteran hip-hopper has in the past.
At this evening's big event the list of registered battle DJs includes longtime competitor/two time
US DMC champ DJ Esquire out of  Brooklyn (see video below of him battling DJ Cleancut in 2012 US Finals), the 2009 DMC US Supremacy Champ DJ Supreme the Global Reset, the 2014 NYC DMC champ (see video below) and 2014 US runner up DJ Dwells,  the 2012 Roc Raida Gong DJ Battle Champ repping Maryland DJ As-One, and tireless regular competitor who's never afraid to push the envelope: John Swan out of Brooklyn NY. The other registered competitors for tonight include The Don Santos: (Brighton MA), Icecold Chet (Knockemstiff OH), Bobby Bangers (Boston MA), D Spliff (NY, NY),  DJ AJ (New Britain CT), Dj Xcalibur aka Mad Max (Harlem, NY), Ned Nice  (Brooklyn NY),  DJ Polarity (Bronx NY), DJ Hear No Evil (Mount Vernon NY), DJ Gremlinz (Shirley MA), DJ Flav (Springfield Gardens NY),  DJ Nick Diablo (Hillsdale NJ), DJ Stay High (Elmhurst, NY),  DJ C2 (Brooklyn NY), DJ Mika (Brooklyn NY),    Robbie Wilde (Union NJ), DJ Runrie (Brooklyn NY),  Finger Smith (Brooklyn NY), and New Jersey's Infa-J.

DJ Precision Wins 2015 DMC US Finals Again, With Manwell Placing Second And Dwells In Third Place

At Webster Hall in New York City this evening the heated national annual turntablist battle for the best DJ in the USA, the prestigious 2015 DMC US Finals, took place with Queens' own DJ Precision winning the title at the East 11th Street venue. The DJ has won three times (including this latest battle) in the six minute battle, plus he also won in this year's DMC US Supremacy, which adds up to an impressive four DMC US titles in all.

An icon within the turntable community and a regular DMC battle participant and winner, Precision (born Perrin Wright ) won the national title last three years ago at the 2012 US DMC US Finals DJ battle. At that DMC US Finals battle, also held at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on the west side of Greenwich Village, the runner up was Virginia's DJ I-Dee, but then last year won the US Finals (the previous year's 2013 US DMC Finals winner was DJ Esquire). At that 2012 US DMC Finals, the third place slot was earned by LA representative Manwell who made it back into the finals again this year where he took second place. Meanwhile, in third place this year was DJ Dwells -  the supertalented young winner of the NYC Regional battle for two years in a row. In last year's US Finals, Dwells, who is now only 15, took second place. This year, despite been tipped by many as a potential winner of tonight's battle, he was overtaken in the heated turntable showdown in which other talented participants included DJ Ambideckstriks, DJ Ease, and DJ Throwdown.

DJ battles and skratch music are enjoying a peak in both popularity and creativity right now. Age matters less than passion and commitment when it comes to skills and style displayed in turntablism. And Lord Finesse is a hella funny guy! Those are just a few of the things made quite apparent in Manhattan recently at the highly competitive but ever-entertaining 2015 DMC New York City Regional DJ battle where 15-year-old DJ Dwells took the title for the second year in a row, with the Bay Area's DJ Dstrukt coming in second, and As-One in third place.

Overseen by Christie Z-Pabon (pictured right), the smoothly run, perfectly on schedule four-hour event took place on May 23rd at Webster Hall where the widely diverse and appreciative audience proved the point that the turntable-based art form, which has gone through some highs and lows in popularity over the past couple of decades, is indeed in a most healthy state currently.

2015 SF DMC Battle (April 12 @ Brick & Mortar) Fosters "Accepting Vibe Where Everyone Can Feel Respected And Encouraged"

Three years ago in April of 2012, following a noticeably long six-year absence, the longtime DMC DJ Battle returned to San Francisco with its 2012 DMC Bay Area Regional Battle at 330 Ritch at which DJ Sol Rising won the turntable competition. It was a most welcomed return of the world's longest running, most recognized, and prestigious DJ battle to the epicenter of turntablism/skratch music in the country. Thankfully, each year since then a Bay Area DMC Regional, one that determines who will go on to represent NorCal in the DMC USA national finals in New York, has taken place. The 2015 DMC San Francisco Regional DJ Battle will take place this coming Sunday, April 12th, at Brick and Mortar Music Hall in the Mission District of San Francisco. Tix here.

As well as being the NorCal Regional battle, the event will also encompass the Battle for US Supremacy as part of the six-hour long program. The event is special also in the fact that this year's will be an all-ages event! Note that there is still time to enter for the battle by contacting usa@dmcworld.com. DJs have until exactly 11:59pm on April 11th to register for the battles on April 12th. This year's battle has the backing of the Rane DJ gear company along with the pioneering Bay Area DJ Cue's (co-founder of the Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters) San Brun-based Special Tech DJ school.

What a great week it has been for hip-hop in New York City! On top of the big 2014 DMC US Finals at Webster Hall in the East Village on Saturday (reviewed on Amoeblog here) and the following day's nearby Battle Ave DJ battle at Turntable Lab, there were clubs and concerts galore, an amazing True School Park Jam yesterday, the Harlem Hip-Hop Festival - part of Harlem Week - over the weekend, and first annual International Hip Hop Parade on Saturday. The parade took place in none other than the "Boogie Down" Bronx, the borough where hip-hop was born 41 years ago, with many legendary figures in attendance including the three grand marshals of the parade Melle Mel, Grand Wizzard Theodore, and Kool DJ Red Alert (who afterwards called the parade "a great event to recognize this unstoppable culture that was born in the Bronx."). The organizers of the parade, which took place along Bathgate Avenue to a positive response from onlookers, say that they plan to travel to a new location each year for the event, noting that their mission statement is one of, "showing the positive side of Hip Hop music through technology, education, and expression."  More info.
