Tonight's 2017 DMC NYC Regional DJ Battle @ The Highline Ballroom Is A Reminder That The Annual DJ Battle Season is Well Underway

As the new year is less new and the weeks/months have quickly slipped by leaving us in the second half of March 2017, we are back into the annual DJ battle season. And tonight in New York City one of themost important turntable showdowns (and typically first of the Regional DMCs) takes place with the 2017
DMC NYC Regional DJ Battle. The battle winner tonight will in turn face off against the winners from all
the upcoming Regional USA DMC battle winners in the summer 2017 USA battle. That winner (last year it was DJ Traps - left) will go on to rep the US in the 2017 DMC World Championships held in London in approx six months from now. This year taking place at the new location of the Highline Ballroom in the Chelsea district of Manhattan the NYC DMC Regional will feature an impressive list of registered battle DJs: some of whom could be future stars.. This evening's 6pm to 11pm event features a nice balance of new and seasoned turntablists battling it out on the ones and twos (full list below) plus impressive showcase and party rockin' sets from DJ Shiftee and DJ Nelson. And who knows, maybe the event's always entertaining and multi-talented host Lord Finesse might do an impromptu DJ performance as the veteran hip-hopper has in the past.
At this evening's big event the list of registered battle DJs includes longtime competitor/two time
US DMC champ DJ Esquire out of  Brooklyn (see video below of him battling DJ Cleancut in 2012 US Finals), the 2009 DMC US Supremacy Champ DJ Supreme the Global Reset, the 2014 NYC DMC champ (see video below) and 2014 US runner up DJ Dwells,  the 2012 Roc Raida Gong DJ Battle Champ repping Maryland DJ As-One, and tireless regular competitor who's never afraid to push the envelope: John Swan out of Brooklyn NY. The other registered competitors for tonight include The Don Santos: (Brighton MA), Icecold Chet (Knockemstiff OH), Bobby Bangers (Boston MA), D Spliff (NY, NY),  DJ AJ (New Britain CT), Dj Xcalibur aka Mad Max (Harlem, NY), Ned Nice  (Brooklyn NY),  DJ Polarity (Bronx NY), DJ Hear No Evil (Mount Vernon NY), DJ Gremlinz (Shirley MA), DJ Flav (Springfield Gardens NY),  DJ Nick Diablo (Hillsdale NJ), DJ Stay High (Elmhurst, NY),  DJ C2 (Brooklyn NY), DJ Mika (Brooklyn NY),    Robbie Wilde (Union NJ), DJ Runrie (Brooklyn NY),  Finger Smith (Brooklyn NY), and New Jersey's Infa-J.

2014 DMC US Finals Winners: Proof That Prep For Prestigious Battle Starts At Young Age

2014 DMC US Champions Top 5 (Showcase style: six minutes each DJ)

1st: DJ I-Dee (Fairfax VA)

2nd: DJ Dwells (NYC)

3rd: DJ Ease (Rochester NY)
(aka
 International Ease)

4th: DJ Esquire (Brooklyn NY)

5th: Ichy the Killer (San Jose CA)

DJs I-Dee and Dwells - the winner and runner-up respectively in this year's heated 2014 DMC US Finals DJ battle presented by Rane, that took place Saturday night at Webster Hall in New York City - are both examples that battle DJing is something that many get into at an increasingly younger age. They're also proof that the DMC is indeed as it claims to be the "most prestigious" and important competition for DJs out of the many other battles over the years - since it's the DMC that these two (like most DJs) strive towards winning, and that each have meticulously studied videos of past DMC competitions for inspiration in bettering their skills in preparing for battle. "When I first started DJing seventeen years ago, when I was ten, I picked up a whole bunch of DMC tapes," said the new US DMC battle champ DJ I-Dee in his acceptance speech for the title that will take him to the UK in October for the 2014 DMC World Championships. "My goal was accomplished ten years ago when I made the [DMC] US Finals. And everything after that has been a complete bonus," added the Fairfax VA DJ [seen in above pic c/o Arvee Eco Photography who supplied most of the photos for this review - others c/o Christie Z-Pabon of DMC/Tools of War].

Hip-Hop History Tuesdays: History of the DMC DJ Battle Organization

Above is part one of the recently published documentary on the DMC, which is the DJ battle organization that began in 1986 in the UK by famed Radio Luxembourg DJ Tony Prince who formed the "Disco Mix Club" or DMC as an offshoot of the Disco Mix Club Show radio program that he began five years earlier. His first spawned remixes that were then released on tape and  vinyl, which then in turn led to the actual DJ competition. Initially the battles were more themed towards (as the name implied) "disco" party DJ mixing, but then (after noting the turntablist style of the US Superman/New Music Seminar (NMS) battles) changed up their focus from purely DJ mixing to the more intricate scratch/turntablist hip-hop DJ styles and techniques. Nowadays a respected worldwide organization with battles in countless countries that lead up to an annual worldwide championship battle, its most recent years' developments (which some love and some hate) have been mostly digital era related. These include ones such as allowing DJs to utilize laptops with programs like Serato and Traktor, and also well as hosting online DJ competitions whereby DJs record at their homes their own battle routines and upload them online to be judged by the DMC. Brooklyn DJ Esquire Took US Title In Heated, High Caliber 2013 US DMC Finals DJ Battle

DJ Esquire took the 2013 US DMC Finals title over the weekend in New York at a packed Stage 48  nightclub with DJs Spare Change and Ease taking second and third places respectively in an entertaining evening that featured inspired six minute sets by each of the 13 US contestants, event host Kool DJ Red Alert providing funny banter, great sets by the special guest performer DJs Rockin Rob, Johnny Juice, and DJ Izoh, plus a surprise moment of true turntablist romance when New Mexico contestant OHM proposed to his girlfriend.

New York City DJ Esquire became a hometown hero Saturday night at the Hells Kitchen district club when garnered the most votes to take the new title at the 2013 US DMC Finals following a heated, high caliber DJ battle featuring 13 turntable talents from all across the country,. This achievement, that he earned despite his needle breaking toward the end of his intense six minute routine, means that the Brooklyn DJ will travel to London, England to represent the US in the DMC World DJ Championship 2013 finals on October 5th. Saturday night's talent-packed battle presented somewhat of a dilemma for all the judges, myself included, since the talent was so great that it was incredibly tough in making that final decision of narrowing it down to just three DJs. Truth is that each of the other ten DJ contestants also delivered incredibly impressive sets and, it could be argued, that any one of them deserved to have ranked in the final three. I was not alone in this summation since, after the battle, talking to such fellow judges as Roli Rho, DJ Cheese, DJ Shiftee, and Snayk Eyez - all of whom had chosen different top threes - the consensus was that it was too challenging task to narrow it down to a top three. Snayk Eyez summed the battle and the content of the competitors up best when he noted how each competitor was 100% on their game with their skills down to perfection meaning that then, "It all came down to delivery, presentation, showmanship," said the visiting Bay Area DJ/judge.

DJ Quest: May 2013 Amoeblog Interview

Posted by Billyjam, May 9, 2013 02:38pm | Post a Comment
Usually DJ Quest goes to Amoeba but last week it was the other way around when the Amoeblog visited the Mission District home studios of the legendary San Francisco turntablist (video below) who has done several performances at Amoeba Music over the years including a record release set for his 2008 album Questulous and another with the DJ youth group the The DJ Project, that featured youth DJs from Horizons Unlimited and the Quest School of DJ Arts, where he mentors at-risk youth to gain arts education as well as the employment and entrepreneurial skills to help get them music-related careers. Throughout his two-decade plus career DJ Quest has always been as much of an inspiration and educator to aspiring DJs as he has been an artist/performer - using the turntable as a tool and sort of text book to educate and inspire. Last summer accompanied by talented young DJs he went down to Monterey County, CA where, as part of the Monterey County Free Libraries' (MCFL) Summer Reading 2012 program at several branches across the county he hosted several well-received scratch/hip-hop DJ turntable performances and Q+A seminars.
