Evidence's 2018 album "Weather Or Not" Marks Career Turning Point For Vencie Beach Producer/Emcee (Amoeblog Interview)

Evidence pictured in Venice Beach on cover of his new album Weather Or Not  (also blue vinyl/2LP) where, for the past 2 years, the talented producer/emcee has had to stay close to his home studio.

Sometime into the first half of the next decade highly revered SoCal hip-hop artist Evidence envisions himself holed up in his Venice Beach home studio with a long ass beard, a la Rick Rubin, producing young up-and-coming artists. That vision/goal is all part of a new five year plan that the longtime prolific artist recently hatched as the result of some life changing incidents over the past couple of years; as shared in his Amoeblog interview (scroll down to hear). These changes resulted in Evidence not going out on tour for the past couple of years, as he traditionally would have done, but instead stay close to his Venice Beach home/studio. There in addition to working on his own new solo album, Weather Or Not (also on blue vinyl/2LP set) via Rhymesayers, he's been channeling his creative energy into working with other artists. These have included producing albums/EPs for Madchild (The Darkest Hour), Defari (Rare Poise - also on vinyl/LP), and Domo Genesis. (Aren't U Glad You're U?).

Amoeba San Francisco Platinum Anniversary Celebrated Via 20 Years of Hip-Hop Albums 1997-2017: from Company Flow to Wiki

Posted by Billyjam, November 18, 2017 04:23pm | Post a Comment

As you likely already know today is part-two of the two-day 20 year (Platinum) anniversary celebration of Amoeba San Francisco that opened back in November 1997. In-store happenings at the historic SF Haight-Ashbury District location, that formerly housed a bowling alley, include music spinning from DJs with Amoeba SF roots: J Boogie, DJ Rascue, DocFu, and Mike Bee and the Platinum party going strong
til 8pm this evening.  Full details on Amoeba SF Platinum Anniversary Celebration. In celebration of Amoeba SF's 20 years of  providing bottomless crates for DJs and hip-hop fans to dig from, below is a quick look back at select hip-hop album releases from the twenty years that Amoeba San Francisco has been open. Sure it’s a subjective list culled from the countless great albums released over these past two decades. But it is also a reminder of how quickly the time has flown since Amoeba Music opened on Haight Street back in November 1997. Note that the Hollywood store opened a few years later in November 2001 and that the Amoeba Music Berkeley store (the original) had already been open for seven years at this point. The photo above is from seven years ago, November 2010, during the 20 year anniversary celebration of Amoeba Berkeley. It pictures two of that day’s performers: former Amoeba employee and Anticon hero Adam "DoseoneDrucker along with Pam The Funkstress of The Coup. As posted on the Amoeblog two days ago the longtime Bay Area DJ, also known as Purple Pam, is currently in hospital and battling for her life. As of time of publishing this story on Saturday afternoon, no further updates on Pam’s health had been issued but once they have will be posted here on the Amoeblog. [UPDATE EDIT on Saturday Nov 18th a little after 7pm (Pacific time) good news posted on social media regarding Pam's status, stating that "she had a successful surgery and is on her way to recovery" and that she and her family, "want to thank everyone for their prayers and concern."]
Meantime below are 20 hip-hop albums from the past 20 years of Amoeba SF's existence at 1855 Haight St, San Francisco, California 94117

Amoeba Music Hip-Hop Top 5: 05: 05: 2017

1: Homeboy Sandman Veins LP  (Stones Throw/Fat Beats)

2: Onra Chinoiseries 3 (also avail on vinylLP) (All City Records)

3: Brother Ali All The Beauty In This Whole Life (also avail on vinylLP) (Rhymesayers Ent)

4: Dilated Peoples The Platform LP (Get On Down)

5: Blockhead Uncle Tony's Coloring Book LP (Young Heavy Souls)

Number one new release this week, out today May 5th 2017 (happy Cinco De Mayo!) is the latest from the always amazing Homeboy Sandman: Veins LP  via Stones Throw / Fat Beats.  The vinyl only (so far) album features such killer tracks as the advance songs "Bamboo" and "Clarity" (see both music videos below). And while the ten song Veins album may only clock in at just over 24 minutes in length, as I have stated here before, Homeboy Sandman's unique intricate deep rhymes pack more clever thought-provoking lyrics  into one song than the average contemporary hip-hop artist manages to do in an entire album!

Historic Event For A City That Once Banned Rap, Oakland's Hiero Day 2016 Elevated It To Best Damn Hip-Hop Festival Ever

Posted by Billyjam, September 7, 2016 07:07am | Post a Comment

Oakland's annual all day hip-hop festival, Hiero Day 2016 that took place two days ago, was both amazing and historic. Only in its fifth year, the Hieroglyphics collective curated event has not only already established itself as the best annual music and cultural festival in The Town (Oakland). But this annual Labor Day's sold-out, talent-packed, festival comprised of three different concert stages, each offering top notch and totally diverse hip-hop acts, elevated Hiero Day into the best damn hip-hop festival anywhere! Attended by respectful hip-hop fans of all generations and races, but each sharing an appreciation for all styles of hip-hop, Hiero Day 2016 exuded the most positive, peaceful, uplifting vibe of any hip-hop event of its scale that I have ever witnessed anywhere. And that prevailing positive vibe that permeated the air on Monday all seemed to fuel  the energy of the acts on stage and their tight sets. Monday's diverse list of over 50 performers included Too $hort, Paris, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Dilated Peoples, Murs, Mr. Lif, Just Blaze, Young L, and the Hieros themselves..

SKY FERREIRA, Wednesday, February 19

sky ferreira amoeba hollywood

Sky Ferreira’s show at Amoeba Hollywood was one of those great zeitgeisty shows where we knew we were all seeing a huge new star at the height of her hype and acclaim. Ferreira was charming and cool, engaging with the tons of young fans who came out to see her and pulling out a surprise by coming back to the stage to sing her breakthrough song, “Everything Is Embarrassing.” Read my review of the show here.

DEAP VALLY, Tuesday, May 13

The duo of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards pulled out blistering fuzz-rock guitars and caveman stomp with hair-flying abandon at this punchy performance of tunes from their debut record, Sistrionix. Troy and Edwards easily worked the crowd into a froth and left them wanting more.
