Nick Thune Hosts a Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, October 3rd we had a great time at Amoeba Hollywood with our first-time host, comedian and actor Nick Thune! For this month's charity auction, we teamed up again with the awesome folks at NerdMelt and raised money for our friends at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Nick hails from the Great Northwest (Seattle), where he spent his early years growing up. His absurdest view and deadpan wit combined with the soothing lull of his guitar, have distinguished his unique style of comedy. He has appeared on the Tonight Show eight times, and on each occasion, he won. Nick has also appeared on Conan, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and has his own Comedy Central special. His comedy special, Folk Hero, is available on Netflix and iTunes and you can get a copy on vinyl at Amoeba, of course.

Nick auctioned off a vast and crazy array of concert tickets, gift certificates to local hot spots, and random promotional stuff---with all proceeds benefitting the Silverlake Conservatory of Music's scholarship programs. Their mission is to facilitate basic music education, focusing on the youth of the community while welcoming everyone to participate. The Conservatory offers private music lessons at a reasonable cost and grants scholarships to children in need, providing free lessons and instruments. The study of music enriches not only the life of the student, but the community and society as well.

This weekend marks the nineteenth year of Hip Hop In The Park - Berkeley's annual free, all ages, all elements inclusive, hip-hop event in Peoples Park, located behind Amoeba Berkeley. Since 1997, the Students For Hop Hop @ Cal have been presenting this always fun afternoon celebration of hip-hop culture. This year's headliner is Fashawn who has been winning over a whole wave of fans since connecting with Nas and the Queensbridge rapper's new label,  Mass Appeal, on which he released the critically acclaimed The Ecology two months ago. Just in the past week, the Fresno rapper unleashed the album's second single and accompanying video, "Higher."

The Souls of Mischief along with their childhood friend and director of the engaging documentary on the Hiero crew, 'Til Infinity, Shomari Smith are all in New York City right now for the screening of the film tonight at the Helen Mills Theater on West 26th Street as part of the New York City International Film Festival (NYCIFF 2015). So far, the veteran Oakland hip-hop crew have included doing an interview with Birthplace magazine, and stopping by an old friend's radio show.

Happy Record Store Day at Amoeba HollywoodThe line started forming in the wee hours of Saturday morning, as music fans jostled to get a prime spot in the queue for Record Store Day 2015 at Amoeba Hollywood. Our friends at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf were on hand to pass out coffee and pastries to our dedicated morning visitors while they filled out their lists of the Record Store Day exclusive releases they hoped to score. Behind-the-scenes, our busy Amoeba elves got to work filling orders. For the hundreds standing outside, the wait was finally worth it when they could cop the special, limited release LPs they’d been hoping for. Visitors could also grab a special Amoeba goodie bag featuring Converse Chuck Taylor art designed by Amoeba employees (including one pictured below featuring work by store co-owner Marc Weinstein) and packed with all kinds of awesome surprises.

We talked to the vinyl enthusiasts in line at Amoeba this morning to find out what they were looking for this year and why they love vinyl so much.

Amoeba Hollywood's Charity Auction Recap

On Saturday, February 7 we had our first charity auction of 2015 at Amoeba Hollywood! We are right around the corner from our annual Mardi Gras festivities and parade, so it was apropro that the auction benefited two amazing New Orleans charities, Tipitina's Foundation and New Orleans Musicians' Clinic. Our guest host was the hilarious writer/performer Kristina Wong, who seemed to have a blast at her first appearance on our auction stage. The East Bay Express has described Kristina as "brutal but hilarious… a woman who takes life’s absurdities very seriously" and she really brought it with the zingers and one-liners! She was relentless at driving up the bids and she definitely helped raise a lot of money for New Orleans.

We have a long history with both of the recipient's of this month's auction. Tipitina's Foundation provides instruments to youth in New Orleans through their Instruments A Comin' program. The program is now in its thirteenth year and has placed more than $3 million dollars worth of musical instruments in over 95 Louisiana school music programs. And it's just one of the things Tipitina's does to help preserve and further Louisiana's music and culture.

Tennis System Chat With the Amoeblog Before Their Jan. 15 Performance at Amoeba Hollywood

tennis system amoebaL.A.’s Tennis System play a brand of psychedelic, dreamy rock ‘n’ roll that should please any fan of the shoegaze movement, yet they’ve got their own thing going, as new album Technicolor Blind trades between rocketing guitar noise and shimmering ambience.

Led by Matty Taylor, along with drummer Hector Gomez and bassist Zach Bilson, the trio has shared the stage with such like-minded acts as Ty Segall, Wavves, Japandroids and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Taylor started the band in Washington, D.C. in 2009 and released the 2011 noise-rock album Teenagers before heading to L.A. and changing up the band’s lineup and sound a bit.

Now they’ve found their niche within the Part Time Punks crowd and have been wowing audiences with their volume-heavy shows and excellent second album, released last year. They’re one of the latest bands to record a track as part of Converse Rubber Tracks, which gives up-and-coming bands studio time and exposure. Tennis System performs live at Amoeba Hollywood today at 6 p.m.
