Saturday, April 21, 2018, marked the eleventh year of what has become the greatest holiday on earth. Yes, Amoeba SF, along with hundreds of independently owned music stores across the world, celebrated Record Store Day and it was glorious. We opened at 9am this year to a line that went down Haight Street and around the corner onto Stanyan, and around the corner again onto Waller! What could possibly make music fans line up so early on a Saturday, you ask? Why, limited edition releases, of course! This year's smash hits included Phish's Billy Breathes, a reissue of Chicano Batman's debut album, Arcade Fire on translucent blue vinyl, and so many more.

Folks were also lined up to get this year's limited edition Amoeba SF RSD t-shirt (screen printed by our friends at Free Gold Watch), partake in our sales, and groove to the happening sounds of our guest DJs Bearzbub, Simon Guzman, and The B-Side Brujas. At 1pm, a whole new crop of fans showed up to see Twin Shadow perform live.

Alice Bag What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Chicana punk legend Alice Bag visited Amoeba Hollywood recently and talked with us about the woman's narrative in rock and picked up albums by Javier Solis, Garbage, Chicano Batman, Shopping, and more in our latest What's In My Bag? episode.

Alice Bag (née Alicia Armendariz) was born and raised in East Los Angeles. While a teenager, she met fellow traveler Patricia Morrison through their shared love of glam rock. The pair founded their first band, Femme Fatale, which eventually evolved into revered first wave punk band The Bags. With Alice Alice Bag Blueprintand Patricia both taking the stage surname Bag, the band performed their first show at The Masque in the fall of 1977. The release of their 1978 Survive 7" helped establish the band as one of the most promising acts in the nascent LA punk scene. It was the only recording released during the band's lifespan.

Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

Black Moon - Enta da Stage

Black Moon - Enta da Stage: The Remixes

Dropping several weeks after Fat Beats reissued Black Moon’s 1993 hip-hop classic Enta Da Stage on vinyl (also as a 2LP set), was the Enta Da Stage: The Remixes LP set by the influential Brooklyn crew. Both vinyl releases are essential for any hip-hop library. The Remixes LP features remixes and alternate versions previously released in non-album format (incl. M.W. Smooth's mix of "Who Got Da Props?" and DJ Evil Dee's remix of "How Many MC's") as well as previously unheard material such as Buckshot's new vocal version of "Shit Iz Real.” - Billyjam, Hollywood
