The Best "What's In My Bag?" Episodes of 2018

Season 11 of What's In My Bag? kicked into high gear with an episode featuring the lively sister trio HAIM and we kept right on going into this past week when we spoke with legendary record producer Tony Visconti and artist Daphne Guinness. We had so much fun this season and, as always, learned a ton from our guests.

Here are our 10 favorite episodes from season 11. Enjoy and thanks for watching!!

Death From Above

Sebastien Grainger went on a whirlwind shopping trip through our Hollywood store taking pride in his Canadian countrymen, including the likes of Leonard Cohen and Glenn Gould, and waxing poetic about the kinds of artists whose greatness elevates them to a plane of existence that can only be defined as alien.

Valerie June

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and native Tennessean Valerie June picked up some classic records by artists from her home state, including Big Star, Otis Clay, and Patsy Cline. Another important theme for Valerie was spiritual music and she talked about the power of listening to the Grateful Dead and Alice Coltrane. We couldn't help but be charmed by Ms. June and her eclectic, earnest picks.

By Brent James

Whether you’ve attended one of our amazing live shows or maybe even a more casual event such as an album signing, there’s no doubt that there’s never a dull moment at an Amoeba Music brick and mortar store! While every gig here in the store is special, here’s a list of the top shows of 2018 that really blew our socks off! In no particular order…

1. Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, Friday May 18th, 2018

The show kicked off with a procession (led by King Idris of course) that started off at the stage and snaked around the store. Snatching anything and everyone in its path, the band eventually made it back to the stage and kicked off a rousing 45 minute set of material from the band's latest release, An Angel Fell. Watching Idris do his thing would be almost enough to satiate even the most hardened music/Jazz fan, but The Pyramids held their own-laying the foundation for what turned out to be a top notch Jazz show that had jaws dropping and eyes widened with adoration from an appreciative crowd. Even the legendary Rhodessa Jones was in attendance. The evening truly had a special feel to it.

2. The Motels, Friday April 5th, 2018

What an absolute DREAM it was to host the legendary Martha Davis and The Motels on the Amoeba Stage! Playing in support of their latest album, The Last Few Beautiful Days, Davis and Co. tore through a set of familiar classics and newer, soon-to-be Motels staples that left jaws dropped and a the crowd wanting more! See them when you get the chance.

Finn Wolfhard What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard visited Amoeba Hollywood recently and shared some music picks and talked about his band Calpurnia, whose first single "City Boy" was just released last week. "Most of this music is very influential to us," Wolfhard said of his selections, which included his current favorite band, The Lemon Twigs. "They're only a couple years older than I am, which is crazy," the 15-year old actor and musician told us. "They put on an incredible live show," he said before plugging their live video shot during their in-store performance at Amoeba. "Check that out."

Stranger Things 2 posterCanadian actor Finn Wolfhard is best-known for playing Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things. Born in Vancouver, Wolfhard made his first TV appearance on The CW sci-fi drama The 100. This was followed by an episode of Supernatural, in which he played Jordie Pinsky, a kidnapped boy threatened by a soulless babysitter. He auditioned for Stranger Things after seeing an open casting call. He and the rest of the cast won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the 2017 SAG Awards.
