Beloved L.A. noise pop duo No Age are releasing a new album Aug. 20 called An Object (Sub Pop), their first since 2010’s Everything in Between. The new album was recorded by the band at Gaucho’s Electronics in L.A. with collaborator Facundo Bermudez. No song has been released from the album yet; we’ll have it up here as soon as they do!

The tracklist is as follows:

1. No Ground

2. I won’t Be Your Generator

3. C’mon Stimmung

4. Defector/ed

5. An Impression

6. Lock Box

7. Running From A-Go-Go

8. My Hands, Birch and Steel

9. Circling With Dizzy

10. A Ceiling Dreams of a Floor

11. Commerce, Comment, Commence

Best Coast Announces Tour

Best Coast have announced a new tour, and true to form, they'll be playing with excellent bands such as Bleached, Lovely Bad Things and Guards. They'll hit the Fillmore Aug. 15, Big Sur's Henry Miller Library Aug. 16 and L.A.'s The El Rey Aug. 17, all with Bleached (the rest of Best Coast's tour dates can be found on their site.). They'll be debuting songs from their upcoming EP, which has no title or release date announced as of yet, but we'll keep you posted. If you were one of the lucky ones to pick up their recent "Fear of My Identity" b/w "Who Have I Become" Record Store Day 7", perhaps you'll hear those excellent songs too, in addition to those off last year's Jon Brion-produced The Only Place. Read my recent interview with Bleached here, last year's interview with Best Coast here, and check out Best Coast's entry into the Webby-winning "What's In My Bag?" below.

Stream 10 Record Store Day Songs

Posted by Billy Gil, April 15, 2013 02:25pm | Post a Comment

Record Store Day, taking place this year on April 20, will see seemingly countless reissues, but younger bands also take part, most of the time releasing new material on 7” vinyl. Below are a few that you can already stream and sample ahead of their release on Record Store Day. See a full list of releases we’ll have on RSD here. See what Amoeba will have in store for RSD here.

Dan Deacon – “Konono Ripoff No. 1”

The DJ/producer who’s known for producing colorful, ecstatic production takes a stab at Afrobeat, specifically the kind produced by the great Konono No. 1. The 7” will feature two versions of the track, performed by two sets of dual drummers: Kevin O'Meara and Jeremy Hyman on Side A; Denny Bowen and Dave Jacober on Side B. The cover art features the photo by the winner of an Instagram contest; you can see more submissions here.

Dutch Uncles – “Slave to the Atypical Rhythm”

Manchester art-pop group Dutch Uncles have covered the mother of art-pop: Grace Jones (or maybe she’s the aunt, Yoko Ono’s the mother?). Their new album Out of Touch in the Wild also was recently released on Memphis Industries, check it out alongside their cover of “Slave to the Atypical Rhythm.”

10 Releases to Check Out on Record Store Day

Posted by Billy Gil, March 26, 2013 06:35pm | Post a Comment

Record Store Day 2013 takes place April 20, featuring new releases, reissues of out-of-print albums and other rarities. I’ve pulled out 10 titles or sets of releases that jumped out to me personally. If it’s anything like last year, you’ll have to get here early to get those in-demand releases (check out last year’s coverage here).

You can view a listing all of the releases that will be made available that day here and find more information on Record Store Day's official site. Check out my picks below.

The BatsBy Night

The debut release by The Bats, part of the Flying Nun clan of New Zealand jangle-pop bands. The Bats are fronted by Robert Scott, sometime bassist of The Clean, a band whose cult infamy has helped lead to their brethren being rediscovered by a new generation. I haven’t heard By Night, but having quite enjoyed 1987’s Daddy’s Highway, I’m sure their debut is just as chockfull of jangly delights. Seriously, I want to just jump on an airplane slash time machine and live in New Zealand in the ’80s and listen to awesome bands like The Bats, though they’re still around making fine records today.

My Top 50 Albums of 2012

Posted by Billy Gil, December 17, 2012 07:24pm | Post a Comment

50. Purity RingShrines

Purity Ring make Cocteau Twins-style dream pop by way of Salem’s hard-hitting witchhouse on an album more notable for its smooth blending of related genres than for its actual songwriting, but they’ve got a sweet sound nonetheless.

49. Cold ShowersLove & Regret

Cold Showers’ short and sweet debut heralds the arrival of a great new L.A. band, beaming shoegaze guitars over darkwave synths and goth-style vocals. (Read my review of Cold Showers' show here.)

48. Django DjangoDjango Django
