Flatbush Zombies - What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Brooklyn hip hop group Flatbush Zombies visited Amoeba Hollywood recently and showed us some of their favorite records, including a few important soundtracks in their lives, including the rap mockumentary CB4. "This is a public service announcement to all the current rappers right now," said Meechy Darko. "This movie is literally what is going on right now in the world. Not just rap, in the world. People fakin' it 'til they make it." For Erick "the Architect" Elliott, the soundtrack to Friday was particulary meaningful. "This movie introduced me to Curtis Mayfield, Rick James," he told us, continuing, "Ice Cube is really a genius for him to be a MC and do something amazing like this, being on the screen and writing a script." Darko, Elliott, and fellow bandmate Zombie Juice found interesting music and movies, and had a lot to say about the importance of each, making for a fun and insightful What's In My Bag? episode.

Consisting of childhood friends, Flatbush Zombies formed in 2010 and began attracting attention with Flatbush Zombies Vacation In Hellthe release of their "Thug Waffle" video. The band self-released their debut mixtape D.R.U.G.S., an acronym for Death and Reincarnation Under God's Supervision, in 2012. That same year, Flatbush Zombies made an appearance on the RZA track "Just Blowin' in the Wind," written for the Wu-Tang Clan member's film The Man with the Iron Fists

Amoeba Hollywood's top 50 sellers of 2017

Without a doubt, our customers love Kendrick Lamar and Mac DeMarco. They both had three albums appear on our list of the best-selling albums of 2017. Among the classic best-sellers like Michael Jackson's Thriller and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were debut albums from Khalid and SZA. New anniversary reissues were a hot ticket in 2017, with the 50th anniversary editions of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band selling especially well.

Read on to see the full list of Amoeba Hollywood's Top 50 Sellers of 2017.

Khalid American Teen

50. Khalid - American Teen (Released March 2017)

Singer/songwriter Khalid's debut album features the hit single "Location," with its atmosphere of stoned partying, chill vibes, and romantic longing. Treading somewhere in the realm of neo-soul hip hop and unbridled sunshiny pop, American Teen rejects any notion of nihilism and bitterness to create an album that's pure happiness. Bay Area fans were treated to a very special acoustic performance by Khalid at Amoeba SF back when his album first dropped.

De La Soul, Bowie, Ennio Morricone, Sturgill Simpson, & "Compton" OST: Top 5 Reasons 2017 Grammys Don't Completely Suck

One of five Grammy 2017's "Best New Artist" nominees Anderson .Paak (above Feb 2015: Amoeba Hollywood following the release of his album Venice)This year the neo-soul singer/producer/musician from Oxnard (FKA Breezy LoveJoy) released both the solo album Malibu (nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album) & collaborative Yes Lawd! (on LP) with Knxwledge as NxWorries.

Predictably within moments of the public announcement of the nominees for the 2017 Grammys been made last Tuesday (Dec. 6th) disgruntled music fans swarmed social media to vent their outrage over why they felt the Grammys sucked. While many positive music fans agreed with such choices as Beyoncé (nine nominations in all!) or Sia (two nominations), or the inclusion of such relative newcomers as Anderson .Paak and BJ The Chicago Kid (both friends of Amoeba), typically it was the voices of discontent who were the loudest and that dominated the discussions.  These critics were the quickest in expressing their disdain over the picks and, more importantly, the omissions or snubs from the listed nominees for the music biz's biggest annual event: the 59th Grammy Awards to take place on February 12, 2017. "I can't believe that so-and-so [insert their fave artist here] was not included once but that Drake, Rihanna and Kanye West each got eight nominations! What the F.." was a stereotypical response by those of the many unhappy music fans to the Grammys announcement. But being incredulous at the lack of new creative alternative music in a mainstream music event doesn't accomplish anything. It's like Trump whining about how "unwatchable" SNL is while still religiously tuning in each week.

Alessia Cara What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

Canadian R&B/pop singer and songwriter Alessia Cara was recently at Amoeba Hollywood looking for some cool new records and we got a chance to chat with her for our "What's In My Bag?" series. Take, for instance, Amy Winehouse's debut album, Frank, which is one of Cara's all-time favorite albums. "It's just a really interesting mixture of jazz and hip hop." The first track, "Stronger Than Me," especially stood out to Cara. "The entire album is beautiful, I love it," she says.

Alessia Cara began her career by performing covers of popular songs on YouTube. She attracted the attention of Def Jam, who released her official debut single, "Here," in 2015. Her debut full-length studio album, Know-It-All, appeared later that year, with "Here" landing the singer her first top-five Billboard single.

That same year, she made her first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In 2016, she took home the award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards. After touring with Coldplay in the first half of 2016, she then embarked on her own solo headlining tour of North America. She was nominated for the BET Awards 2016 Best New Artist and the American Music Awards 2016 New Artist of the Year.
