Welcome to our re-booted blog series on the employees of Amoeba San Francisco. You know them, youSean Murphy love them, sometimes you see them buying coffee at Whole Foods. Now you can get to know all about them and their departments!

We are kicking off this reinvented column with the one and only Sean Murphy, who you may recognize from behind the registers. What you may not know is that he's also our Apparel and Accessories Buyer. Yes, he's the rock and pop-culture maven behind our ever-growing t-shirt collection. Lean in and learn more.

Amoeblog: How long have you been with Amoeba SF?

Sean: This April will be 12 years. It's the longest I've ever been at a job, by far.

Amoeblog: What sort of shirts do you order for Amoeba SF?

Sean: In addition to ordering and helping choose designs for all the Amoeba apparel, I order all of our music, movie, and pop-culture tees.

Amoeblog: How do you decide what to order?

Sean: I've always had a good eye for cool designs, and before Amoeba I was in the vintage clothing world where I specialized in picking music and pop-culture tees for almost 12 years. I still wear graphic tees pretty much every day. Ha ha.

Amoeblog: What do you like most about being "the t-shirt guy"?

Sean: I'm just going to unashamedly brag and say the thing I like best about it is that I've more than doubled sales since I took over the department, and now our promotions team is designing window displays to showcase our awesome selection. Tees are bringing new people into the store and I'm really proud to be a part of that.

Amoebapalooza SF at Milk Bar, February 17

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, February 9, 2019 06:50pm | Post a Comment

Amoebapalooza SF is back with more Amoebite-powered musical mayhem on Sunday, February 17th. We’re keeping things very local and throwing this shindig directly across the street at Milk Bar (1840 Haight St.). Doors open to the public at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Admission is just $5. This is a 21+ event.

This annual celebration of the talented Amoeba employees and FOBs (Friends of Amoeba) is always a hoot and this year's line-up is action-packed. From a provacative live reading by author Jon Longhi to a screening of filmmaker Steven Anguiano's short film to raucous live sets from Use Kleenex (Kleenex coverband), Top Fo'ties (AKA Jesus Dude Mom), novelty rock giants Alan's Cousin, Combo (Michael Cruz and Keith Frerichs), Eli & Adam Play Folk Music, and a mysterious project called I Have Crabs, this is shaping up to be one of the most legendary nights yet.

Thank you to our pals over at SIR for providing our musical back line!

Band spotlight: Alan's Cousin
Imagine Flight Of The Conchords and Tenacious D have a baby, and meanwhile, James Taylor and Alan's CousinSugar Ray have a baby. Those two babies get it on and have baby, but they realize, "Hold up, we were born a few days ago, we simply cannot raise a child." Said baby is given up for adoption and raised by Bob Dylan and The Beatles. That baby is Alan's Cousin.

Amoeba SF's Top In-Stores of 2018

By Brent James

Whether you’ve attended one of our amazing live shows or maybe even a more casual event such as an album signing, there’s no doubt that there’s never a dull moment at an Amoeba Music brick and mortar store! While every gig here in the store is special, here’s a list of the top shows of 2018 that really blew our socks off! In no particular order…

1. Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, Friday May 18th, 2018

The show kicked off with a procession (led by King Idris of course) that started off at the stage and snaked around the store. Snatching anything and everyone in its path, the band eventually made it back to the stage and kicked off a rousing 45 minute set of material from the band's latest release, An Angel Fell. Watching Idris do his thing would be almost enough to satiate even the most hardened music/Jazz fan, but The Pyramids held their own-laying the foundation for what turned out to be a top notch Jazz show that had jaws dropping and eyes widened with adoration from an appreciative crowd. Even the legendary Rhodessa Jones was in attendance. The evening truly had a special feel to it.

2. The Motels, Friday April 5th, 2018

What an absolute DREAM it was to host the legendary Martha Davis and The Motels on the Amoeba Stage! Playing in support of their latest album, The Last Few Beautiful Days, Davis and Co. tore through a set of familiar classics and newer, soon-to-be Motels staples that left jaws dropped and a the crowd wanting more! See them when you get the chance.
