New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Modern Baseball

Modern Baseball What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

We recently learned here at Amoeba Hollywood that Philly pop-punk rockers Modern Baseball are real cinephiles. On their recent visit to the store the boys picked up some classic DVDs and Blu-rays, like Paul Blart: Mall Cop, starring Kevin James. "This is a great mix of physical humor and...themes of the modern mall," says drummer Sean Huber, before surprising everyone in the room with his knowledge of the fictional mall's inspiration, The Willowbrook Mall, outside of West Orange, NJ. It turns out guitarist Brendan Lukens is a huge Spielberg fan, not only picking up the 30th anniversary edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures box set, but also the vinyl soundtrack to his personal favorite, Jurassic Park. The band had lots of cool picks and tons of laughs as they revealed what else was in their bags.

Modern Baseball Holy GhostModern Baseball formed when Brendan Lukens and Jake Ewald were still in high school. Originally an acoustic duo, after the two friends relocated to Philadelphia for college they met drummer Sean Huber and bassist Ian Farmer, solidifying the band's current lineup. The band got their start playing house shows around Drexel University, where Ewald was a student. In 2012, they released their first album, Sports, which was recorded at Drexel.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn

Nicolas Winding Refn What's In My Bag? Amoeba Hollywood

Just what is acclaimed director, producer, and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn listening to these days? Would you believe us if we told you it was ska? That's right, Mr. Refn, whose latest films have featured Cliff Martinez' moody '80s-inflected synth scores, has been getting into the up-beat, Jamaican, skankin' precursor to reggae. Before his and Cliff Martinez' recent soundtrack signing at Amoeba Hollywood the director picked up two great compilations by the legendary Jamaican labels Treasure Isle and Trojan. But, of course, it wasn't all island grooves for Refn, and we were not surprised to find a plethora of eclectic music in his bag.

The Neon Demon Blu-rayRefn launched onto the movie scene with the release of the Danish crime drama Pusher in 1996. This was followed by 1999's Bleeder, as well as two Pusher sequels in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Refn wrote his first English-language flick, Fear X, in 2003, but gained more attention with the 2008 release of Bronson, starring Tom Hardy.

His first major success in America came with 2011's Drive, a Cannes favorite that led to his acceptance of the festival's Best Director Award. Only God Forgives hit theaters next, and was followed in 2016 by The Neon Demon. The film was in competition for the Palme d'Or at Cannes that year--Refn's third picture to do so.

Cassette Store Day 2016On Saturday, October 8th, fans of magnetic tape, great tunes, and all things cassette will celebrate the fourth annual Cassette Store Day. Founded in 2013 by a group of UK record labels, Cassette Store Day gives props to the humble cassette tape in the same way Record Store Day pays homage to indie record shop culture. The celebration has since expanded to the US, Japan, Germany, and France, and naturally we're excited for an influx of new tapes here at Amoeba Hollywood, too.

Here are the top ten special Cassette Store Day releases we're pumped to slip into our Walkman.

Death Cab

Death Cab for Cutie
The Photo Album

In celebration of The Photo Album's 15th anniversary, Barsuk is reissuing this 2001 release on cassette for the first time. The tape includes "Gridlock Caravans," a rarity which has only been available on vinyl and some international releases.

Charity Auction recap

The amazingly smart and hilarious DC Pierson returned to Amoeba Hollywood on Saturday, October 1st to host our charity auction for Rock The Vote! DC has presided over our auction before so we were ready for hilarity and big bids, and he delivered.

"Can I hear $60.00 for democracy?! Let's get some bids going for Rock The Vote!!"

DC Pierson is a comedian and author of the novels The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep And Never Had To and Crap Kingdom. He is in a group called DERRICK Comedy which made the film Mystery Team. He's been seen in the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier and on TV shows like Community and Key & Peele. He is absolutely one of our very favorite auctioneers of all time! His skills as an auctioneer were in full force as he offered up a crazy array of concert tickets, collectibles, and gift certificates from our amazing neighbors, and other things you never knew you had to have. As always, we matched all winning bids up to $1,000, which means we doubled the money going to benefit Rock The Vote.

Some of the goodies up for auction this time and the bids they got:
