Amoeblog Music Video Premiere: Prozack Turner “Girls On A Trampoline” (2018)

Special shout out to Prozack Turner of Foreign Legion and solo fame for granting the Amoeblog the world premiere of his new music video above; “Girls On A Trampoline" from his solo album Not Everybody Sleeps At Night on Hungerstrike Records. With song production care of K Kruze and the cuts by both Irish turntablist DJ Flip and Bay Area turntable talent DJ Halo, the lyrics of this killer track include references to his two Foreign Legion buddies DJ Design and Marc Stretch. Meanwhile the music video's directorial credit goes to Aaron Hartshorn.

“She’s not out the woods yet,” is the official word on the latest health status of DJ Pam “The Funkstress” Warren according to Alex Mejia. The longtime friend of Pam's followed up with the Amoeblog by phone yesterday on the medical status of the hospitalized Bay Area female DJ who suddenly fell ill in recent weeks. Pam first came to fame back in the early 90's with Bay Area political hip-hop group The Coup (with Boots Riley and E-Roc). In the past decade she has become better known for party rocking in clubs as well as being the tour DJ for the late great Prince on his final tour (hence her alias Purple Pam). As reported on the Amoeblog the DJ was recently hospitalized in critical condition and in the ICU and (as noted by Boots Riley) "fighting for her life" as she battled against a sudden illness. The exact cause of Pam's illness is still not publicly known because the artist had specifically asked for “privacy and confidentiality and we must respect her wish” said Mejia yesterday, adding that. “Pam is still fighting for her life,” he added noting how, despite the fact that Pam has medical insurance, that it does not cover all of her costs. Hence why now, currently into her fourth expensive week in a Bay Area hospital, that Pam's family had set up a GoFundMe drive with a $25K goal to offset these costs.

Tyler, The Creator's 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival to include ScHoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Action Bronson, Death Grips

Along with such other artist-curated music events as the Hierogplyics' annual Hiero Day, The Roots' Picnic, and Diplo's national touring Mad Decent Block Party, Tyler, The Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proves that increasingly artists are taking further control of aspects of their careers. Once the domain of concert promoters, more and more artists have been producing or co-producing their own music festivals. MURS' sadly no longer, high-caliber indie hip-hop Paid Dues festival which, up until 2013, presented lovingly assembled hip-hop shows for the better part of a decade.

Although hard work even when these artists work in collaboration (such as Tyler the Creator whose teamed up with Goldenvoice), these artists are doing a damn good job presenting their own music festivals. Proof is evident in the line-up of artists, announced today, for the Odd Future star's 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival taking place in LA in three months from now. Artists confirmed for this year's weekend long music event will include A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Erykah Badu, Chance the Rapper, Death Grips, Flatbush Zombies, DJ Mustard, TOKiMONSTA, Pretty Lights, Kehlani, The Internet, Domo Genesis and, of course, Tyler, The Creator himself.  Check the flyer above for some of other artists on the line-up, with more names to be announced later. Tix will go on sale Monday, August 8th, for the two-day event (Saturday/Sunday, November 12th and 13th) that will take place in Los Angeles at Exposition Park.

Hip Hop Rap Up: Action Bronson, Death Grips, J-Live, Your Old Droog, Greg Grease + more

Amoeba Music Berkeley Top Five Hip-Hop Chart April 09, 2015

1) Death Grips The Powers That B (Third Worlds) also avail in vinyl

2) Action Bronson Mr. Wonderful (Atlantic)

3) Greg Grease Born to Lurk x Forced to Work (Sound Verite)

4) Your Old Droog Your Old Droog (Your Old Droog)

5) J-Live His Own Self (Mortier)

The new Amoeba hip-hop chart number one album is The Powers That B by one of a kind NorCal group Death Grips.  The new double album (avail in both CD and vinyl formats) is the group's fourth studio album and is essentially a two-in-one LP release since it includes both the previously released June 2014 free digital download full-length Niggas on the Moon, plus the second half of the 2 album set been Jenny Death - aka Disc 2.  Now some protest that Death Grips do not qualify as "hip-hop."  E-Lit, who supplied the above current Berkeley hip-hop chart, does not. And neither do I. My feeling is that this totally unique Sacramento trio do not fall under any already established genre or sub-genre of any music and that hip-hop is as good a descriptive starting point as any other to label the band with or, as Amoeba.com accurately labels the group's aggressive sound and crediting them with, "basically created their own genre of aggressive electro noise, Zach Hill’s wildman drumming and MC Ride’s berserk raps."
