#01 Lndn Drugs (Jay Worthy & Sean House) Aktive LP (also on CD) (GDF Records)

Just a glimpse at the album art of Aktive LP (released on CD two months ago and now finally on vinyl) triggers one’s hip-hop brain to think of the LBC and SoCal G-Funk era for good reason. The album artwork is done by Joe Cool who is the very same artist who painted Snoop Doggy Dogg's classic 1993 debut Doggystyle LP (also on CD) album cover while Lndn Drgs two members, rapper Jay Worthy from Compton and producer Sean House from Vancouver, pay homage to the era but in an updated modern fashion even including among their album’s well chosen guests is South Central Jheri-curled emcee talent G Perico (on the tracks "Uza Trikk" and "La Quinta") whose image and dope mic style is a direct link back to that of  Compton pioneer DJ Quik. Also note that last year G Perico and Jay Worthy along with Dallas producer Cardo formed the G-Funk flavored collaborative group G-Worthy.

Top Ten Best & Worst Moments of Krip-Hop in 2016 by Leroy Moore, Krip-Hop Nation Founder [Hip-Hop Artists with Disabilities]

Posted by Billyjam, November 29, 2016 11:49pm | Post a Comment

In taking a look back at krip-hop music and culture in 2016, the Amoeblog invited regular contributor  Leroy Moore, the founder of Krip-Hop Nation [pictured above], to draw up his Top Ten Best and Worst Moments of Krip-Hop in 2016. That list below was assembled by ever busy artist/activist from his Berkeley CA home/office right before heading off to South Africa this week (Dec. 1st) for a Krip-Hop Tour. In looking back over the past year, one in which a certain president elect publicly mocked people with disabilities and in which civil rights overall seemed to take a step backwards, Leroy noted that despite continued obstacles and setbacks that, "Krip-Hop Nation in 2016 continued to plant seeds both internationally and here in the U.S. through interviews, and projects." Leroy further stressed how he and fellow members of Krip-Hop Nation monitored mainstream hip-hop and continually, "called out artists on their ableism." [discrimination against those with disabilities]

1) The film documentary with Emmitt Thrower, Where Is Hope, Police Brutality and Profiling Against People With Disabilities came out in January of 2016 after which we did a whole Bay Area tour of screenings of the film.

Top 20 Songs About Heroin

Posted by Billyjam, November 25, 2014 03:00pm | Post a Comment

Upon hearing the incredible, engaging new single "Bag A Gear" from the Dublin, Ireland-based rapper Tommy KD (formerly known as Man & The Machine) on the topic of his former heroin habit that he is grateful to have finally kicked, I was reminded of the numerous songs tackling the topic of the highly addictive opiate.

I have put together a Top 20 Songs About Heroin list - some seemingly pro but most definitively con. These songs (with accompanying videos) are culled from different genres and different eras but all share views on the same topic - one that has destroyed way too many great musicians' careers and lives over the decades. Just as there are countless terms and nicknames for heroin (horse, smack, H, skag, junk, dirt, brown sugar, golden girl, hell dust, white nurse, thunder, etc. etc.) there are also seemingly endless songs about the drug. This subjective top twenty list could easily be extended into a Top 100 or Top 200 list, so feel free to post any songs on the subject of heroin that you think should have been included. Since I tried to keep it down to 20, I had to cut out duplicates by artists included and did not include such greats as "Ain't it Fun" by both The Dead Boys and Guns N' Roses.

The 25 Best Hip-Hop Movies

Posted by Billyjam, July 24, 2014 06:15pm | Post a Comment

Best Hip Hop films

The definition of "hip hop movies" is pretty darn wide as it covers a broad range of types and styles of films - not to mention differing levels of quality since, let's face it, some have been downright low-budget jenky (bad meaning bad). The hip hop movie genre as a whole encompasses such varieties as concerts films (EG 1995's The Show or 2005's Dave Chappelle's Block Party); documentaries about specific parts of the genre or individual artists (e.g. Scratch or Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme or Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest); bio-pics like Notorious or the semi-biographical Eminem acting vehicle 8-Mile; and straight up pure celebratory flicks that show love for some or all of hip hop's four elements (EG Wild Style, Juice, Beat Street, and Breakin').
