Airborne Toxic Event: Hollywood Park (CD & Vinyl)

In conjunction with frontman Mikel Jollett's memoir of the same name, The Airborne Toxic Event releases this concept record drawing from themes in the book. Incorporates real audio from his family, gospel singers, and orchestral flourishes from violins to timpani to horns. Illustrates dashed dreams and difficult times of childhood, as well as the confusion of an adult life spent nursing the wounds. An ultimate redemption story on finding self-acceptance and love of family.

my top 50 Alternative songs of 1990...the fountain of youth

This quarantine has got me reminiscing about the early '90s. Although honestly I am always thinking about this musical period in my life. The '90s were my decade and have defined my musical tastes. It all began in 1990. I have been obsessed with music since I can remember. From the first time I heard my parents playing Fleetwood Mac & the Eagles I was hooked. I wanted to listen to music whenever I could.

I remember when I first got a radio in my room. I would tape songs off the radio on my tape deck and create my own mix tapes. My brother and I would even create our own radio shows and put in samples and songs from the radio. I probably listened to Power 106 the most in the '80s. I was super into pop music but soon discovered there was something else out there. I remember when a friend in elementary school first told me about the cool radio station KROQ and I went home and put it on and never looked back. I got obsessed with The Cure, Depeche Mode, Oingo Boingo, Love & Rockets, New OrderPet Shop BoysErasure. KROQ was my everything. I was obsessed with all the DJs and learned about all my new favorites bands in the late '80s and early '90s. I was now officially an alternative modern rock kid.

Amoeba Hollywood: A Photo History (Part 4)

Amoeba Hollywood

We are looking back at the amazing history we have seen over the last 19 years in Los Angeles. So much has happened since we opened at 6400 Sunset Blvd in 2001 that it's impossible to do it justice in one piece! View Part One, Part Two, and Part Three of our photo history series celebrating and commemorating our rich history.

Part Four starts in 2012 and a magical performance by Lana Del Rey. Lana performed to a packed house of adoring fans on February 7, 2012. On top of that, it was her first ever in-store performance and her first fan signing event! She performed at Amoeba SF two days later and stayed so late signing autographs for fans that she missed her flight and had to take a car service back home to Los Angeles. She wanted to meet every fan!

Dogs are an important part of our culture at Amoeba. We're a very dog friendly store, with dog treats at the info counter and staff happily available to give belly rubs to our furry visitors. Over the years we've also hosted several pet adoption events with local rescue organizations. On February 12, 2012, we hosted a special Valentine's Day adoption event with The Pepper Foundation and later that year, on October 7, 2012 we hosted a dog adoption event for the Beagle Freedom Project.

Amoeba Hollywood

We are looking back at the amazing history we have seen over the last 19 years in Los Angeles. Although we are not able to give the building the sendoff it deserves, it's our hope that you'll find some joy, some memories, and some solace in these images. So much as happened at Amoeba since we opened at 6400 Sunset Blvd that it's impossible to do it justice in one piece! View Part One and Part Two of our photo history series celebrating and commemorating our rich history.

Part Three focuses on 2010-2011 and starts with a party: our annual Fat Tueday parade inside the aisles of Amoeba and out onto the streets!! Our love for New Orleans goes waaaay back and has been cemented through our charity auctions and other fundraising efforts to support Tipitina's and the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic throughout the years. If you haven't been to a Mardi Gras celebration at Amoeba, you don't know what you're missing! Both our staff and customers get involved with the fun, whether it's bringing a horn and playing "When The Saints Go Marching In" or catching beads from our makeshift balcony by the DJ booth or marching around the block, much to the surprise of passing cars.

Amoeba Hollywood

With the announcement that Amoeba Hollywood will not reopen on Sunset Blvd and will instead focus on hopefully reopening in the fall at our new location at 6200 Hollywood Blvd, we wanted to look back at the amazing history we've seen over the last 19 years. Although we are not able to give the building the sendoff it deserves, it's our hope that you'll find some joy, some memories, and some solace in these images.

So much as happened at Amoeba since we opened at 6400 Sunset Blvd that it's impossible to do it justice in one piece, so we we created this photo history series to celebrate and commemorate our rich history. In Part One, we started with the beginning -- Opening Day November 17, 2001 -- and went through one of the most memorable in-store events we've ever had: Paul McCartney's epic performance in June 2007.

Part Two begins with the second half of 2007 and continues through 2009. April 2008 saw the introduction of two things that have since become staples for Amoeba: Record Store Day and our Webby Award-winning What's In My Bag? series.

Astrological Sounds for Window Gazing

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, May 6, 2020 03:19pm | Post a Comment

By Kai Wada Roath
Ambassador of Confusion Hill and host of the Super Shangri-La Show

"I love fantasizing, my world is on a string,
If dream-land had a ruler, then Pisces would be King!"
~ Harvey Sid Fisher

Have you been listening to psychedelic drone rock while dreaming out the window from your fortress of Zodiac Cosmic Soundssolitude? Has everyday been like Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window but without the view of a Miss Torso? Mystic crystal revelations...I know a few of us could really use some right now. Well I'm here to say, as the "champagne of soul" The 5th Dimension did, "Let the Sunshine In" as this is the perfect time to pull that old astrological record your friend gave you as birthday present years ago out from your vinyl vaults and throw a diamond on it. Take advantage of this time and learn more about your sign.

The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds
With Bud Shank playing the flute and Paul Beaver playing the Moog synthesizer, this 1967 record will for sure help you reach the astral realm. Fill your little glass with some port, turn the dimmer down, and let "Aquarius the Lover of Life" drift you away.

Best Films to Watch While Tripping

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, May 4, 2020 04:21pm | Post a Comment

By Jon Longhi

At Amoeba Music, one of my main jobs is working in the DVD room. Customers frequently ask me, “What’s a good movie to watch while tripping?” These are the movies I recommend:

Yellow SubmarineThe Beatles, Yellow Submarine:
When I was in first grade, my teacher took our class to see Yellow Submarine in the theater. It may have been the single most psychedelic moment of my life, even though it was many years before I tasted my first drug. My mind was completely blown. I don’t even remember the teacher’s name, but they were one of the most influential people in my life just by taking us to that movie. The experience created an insatiable love for all forms of psychedelic music and art that has stuck with me to this day. It started the journey that led to me writing this column. This film is a one of a kind masterpiece largely created by director George Dunning and art director Heinz Edelmann. They combined the talents of truly gifted artists and animators to create one of the best animated movies ever made. It tells the story of how The Beatles free the underwater country of Pepperland from the evil tyranny of the Blue Meanies. This may be the basic plot but the movie is essentially a series of mind blowing visually stunning set pieces set to The Beatles music. This film was a game changer that shifted the entire evolution of animation. The movie is just as amazing today as it was when it was released. From its melting smearing colors to its surreal underwater monsters, this film may be one of the purest psychedelic experiences ever created.
