#HipHopNewArrivals Top 5 March 10 2020

#1 Atmosphere Whenever 2LP (Rhymesayer Entertainment)
#2 Atmosphere Whenever CD (Rhymesayers Entertainment)

Longtime hardworking hip-hop duo Atmosphere officially released their latest excellent album back in mid December in digital format but this past week have followed up with the welcome physical versions; the Whenever 2LP vinyl version and the Whenever CD version of the album. Note that the original late 2019 release of this album coincided with the timing of the power duo's reissuing on vinyl, also via their Rhymesayers Ent, of their bygone bangers Seven's Travels 3LPGod Loves Ugly 2LP and Headshots: Se7en [Anniversary Edition] 2LP.  As expected from the ever reliable longtime duo of emcee Slug and producer Ant  this latest full-length release does not disappoint as witnessed by the album's singles/videos of the tracks "Bde Maka Ska,"  "Lovely (feat. Nikki Jean)," "Love Each Other" and the most recently released  "Dearly Beloved (feat. Musab & Muja Messiah)" (see video below). Other standout tracks on the 43 minute, 12 song album include "Postal Lady" and the album title track that features guest spots from Murs, Haphduzn and Gifted Gab; the latter being the Seattle femcee, not the similarly named NorCal Solesides/Quannum emcee GIft of Gab. Now an elder in the game of hip-hop Slug has not lost any of his legendary lyrical edge or sense of humor;  interspersing funny self-effacing "dad rap" observations into his witty flow.

#3 Mac Miller Circles CD (Warner Bros) [pre-order Circles LP, in advance of April 19, 2020 release]

Mac Miller
's posthumous album Circles CD with the clear vinyl version following next month on April 19th - pre-order here, thankfully bucked the too often true trend of labels callously cashing in on deceased young artists. Rather Warner Bros. has released this genuinely excellent album by the late great popular hip-hop artist, who died in September 2018; one that upon its initial digital release back in January garnered wide positive reviews. Meanwhile the album, that initially was to have been released back in 2018 around the time of Swimming’s release (as a companion release of sorts) got temporarily shelved but is now being released, has been reviewed by Amoeba as such; "The loss of rapper Mac Miller continues to be felt. Miller's posthumous album Circles adds much more to the "what if..." pondering of his future creative output as he matured as both a person and an artist, with the tracks showcasing more of Miller's vocals rather than rapping style. Producer Jon Brion finished the project that had already been in the pre-planning stages before Miller's death, adding only the most organic of elements to the already existing tracks. Circles now gets the deluxe treatment after its initial release, with the addition of two bonus songs: "Right" and "Floating."" Below is the music video for the album track "Hand Me Downs."

#4 The Game Born 2 Rap CD (Entertainment One)

Digitally released back in late November the physical version of Born 2 Rap CD by The Game is now available from Amoeba. When the release was first announced three years in advance by The Game, the West Coast rap icon also stated that this ninth studio album would also be his "final" album release ever. Hence likely why the Compton CA rapper born Jayceon Terrell Taylor pulled out all the stops for this farewell release with an impressively diverse list of guest artists on the ninety minute, 25 track album that include Dom Kennedy, Ed Sheeran, Mozzy, Miguel, Travis Barker, Anderson .Paak, 21 Savage and the late Nipsey Hussle . As noteworthy in crafting the album's overall sound is the equally diverse array of credited samples heard throughout the album that include Junior M.A.F.I.A.Nina SimoneCommon and  D’Angelo’s whose "Devil’s Pie" is sampled on The Game album track "Carmen Electra." Below is the accompanying music video for one of the album's many standout tracks; "Stainless (feat Anderson .Paak)." Longtime fans of The Game have expressed disappointment with the artist's announcement that this is his very "final" last album but given how often artists change their minds on these types of farewell announcements maybe it will not be after all. Meanwhile those fans have this high caliber release to feast on.

#5 2Pac Me Against The World  180-gram 2LP (Interscope Records)

Among the reissued vinyl new arrivals at Amoeba this past week is the 2LP pressing of 2Pac's classic third studio album Me Against The World  180-gram 2LP. The new pressing was timed to coincide with this month's 25 year anniversary of the March 14th, 1995 release by the late great artist's (murdered one year later) groundbreaking album that boasts such Tupac timeless tracks as the prophetic "Death Around The Corner,"  "So Many Tears,"  "Temptations," "So Many Tears” and "Dear Mama." The video for the single "Dear Mama" that was nominated for a Grammy as Best Rap Solo Performance appears below. As reported here in a previous Amoeblog old school Bay Area producer/rapper DJ Assassin, who  collaborated with 2Pac around the time of this album's making, recalled back at that time in the nineties his impressions of Tupac and of first meeting him telling me in an interview how; "I was in the Blue Palms recording studio in LA when he was recording the  Me Against The World   album.  I'll always remember how incredibly gifted he was.  He just walked in,  picked up a pen and paper and wrote his part in fifteen minutes!  Amazing!  He can record a song in no more than two or three takes." Note that among the other 2Pac vinyl pressings from Interscope (also on 180 gram vinyl) available currently from Amoeba are 2Pacalypse Now 2LPStrictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... 2LP  and the four vinyl set 2Pac Greatest Hits 4LP,
