Top 5 Hip-Hop LP/vinyl Arrivals @ Amoeba 01:31:2020

#1 Slum Village & Abstract Orchestra  Fantastic 2020 Vol. 1 LP  (Neastra/Fat Beats)
#2 Slum Village & Abstract Orchestra Fantastic 2020 Vol. 2 LP  (Neastra/Fat Beats)

Slum Village & Abstract Orchestra's  Fantastic 2020 Vol. 1 LP  and Fantastic 2020 Vol. 2 LP  via Neastra/Fat Beats is the new two volume vinyl set (also on CD)  collaboration of Slum Village and Abstract Orchestra's reworking of the Jay Dee (aka J Dilla) produced second Slum Village album;  the hip-hop classic from 2000 Fantastic Vol 2 when the Detroit group's line-up was T3, Baatin and J Dilla.  This 20th anniversary celebratory release is described in part by Fat Beats as British big band Abstract Orchestra applying, "Their own jazzy spin to Dilla's classic productions, with occasional assistance from
the surviving members of Slum Village themselves. The end result is Fantastic 2020, a hybrid blend of smooth, funky brass rhythms with boom-bap sensibilities that is just the kind of tribute that an often unsung, but highly influential group like Slum Village deserves, and is a more than welcome addition to any Dilla completist's library."

The project reportedly evolved during last year’s tour by Slum Village and Abstract Orchestra during which Young RJ was the bandleader for the 18 piece big band orchestra. The result is this new release of new renditions conducted by Slum Village’s Young RJ with the Abstract Orchestra who expertly reconstruct and replay the Slum Village album of 20 years ago. Many Amoeba shoppers are already familiar with the UK based Abstract Orchestra due to their earlier releases that include the studio albums Dilla, MADVILLAIN Vol. 1 and MADVILLAIN Vol. 2.  Below is a video of Rob Mitchell of Abstract Orchestra along with Young RJ of Slum Village discussing the live remake of Fantastic Vol. 2.

#3: Madlib  Bandana Beats LP (RCA)

In keeping their promise from a couple of months back the ever popular in 2019 hip-hop duo of Freddie Gibbs and Madlib have just released on vinyl the anticipated instrumental version of their universally-acclaimed full-length Bandana, via Keep Cool/RCA Records and Madlib Invazion/ESGN, Bandana Beats LP. The new all beats/no vocals vinyl version is the perfect companion piece to the original Bandana album from the partnering producer/emcee power-duo. That 2019 album, that featured such additional talents as  Anderson .PaakPusha T, Killer Mike, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and Black Thought, ranked atop or very high in most-year end lists (including Amoeba’s Best of 2019) and was the sequel to the collaborating pair’s 2014 critically-acclaimed debut together Piñata.

Released last summer Bandana CD and  LP versions followed the March 2019 album advance 12” single of “Flat Tummy Tea” off the fifteen track album. The busy duo of Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, who recently branched out beyond music to team up with both Brooklyn brewery Interboro Spirits & Ales and LA brewery Mumford Brewing in lending their name to two new pilsners, will be among the performers at both weekends of Coachella 2020 in April.

#4 J. Rocc Tribute To Sun Ra(s) G LP (Hit & Run)

Clocking in at a little under half an hour is the new J Rocc album tribute to two late great musical icons from different times/genres but linked by their respective futuristic space takes on jazz and hip-hop music; experimental jazz composer/keyboardist/bandleader Sun Ra who died back in 1993 at age 79 and DJ/producer and integral part of the LA beat scene Ras G who tragically died last summer from natural causes at the young age of 40. On J Rocc’s six track, 27 minute Tribute To Sun Ra(s) G LP via Hit & Run the “best DJ in the world”of the world famous Beat Junkies fame pays tribute to these two legends effortlessly melding Sun Ra’s cosmic jazz with Ras G’s “ghetto sci-fi” sounds.  Note that this black vinyl release is housed in black paper poly-lined inner sleeve, with full-color center labels.

#5: Statik Selektah & Paul Wall Give Thanks LP (Tuff Kong)

The consistently prolific and super-talented producer Statik Selektah, who never fails to bring the best out of his emcee collaborators, delivers yet another banger with his latest partnership with Houston rapper Paul Wall; Give Thanks LP (Tuff Kong). The (all too short) seven song release, that features Statik Selektah’s soul-infused boom-bap sound as the perfect backdrop to Wall’s engaging flow, features guest appearances from several artists including Benny the Butcher, B-Real and Termanology, Nems and Haile Supreme. The latter two appear on the soulful head-nodding album track "Part Of The Game" that you can check out the accompanying music video for below.
