EARTHGANG - What's In My Bag?

We had the pleasure of talking to Atlanta based hip hop duo EARTHGANG at Amoeba Hollywood recently, having shopped the store for some of the records, books, comics and memorabilia that have inspired them. "This is one of the greatest albums ever created in hip hop," Olu (aka Johnny Venus) told us, holding up a copy of UGK's Super Tight. Calling it "the first album that made me wanna get into producing," he went on to say, "I really appreciate the way that these records painted life in the south...these cats are really intelligent."

EARTHGANG consists of Olu and WowGr8 (aka Doctur Dot). The group was founded in 2008 while both members were still in high school. They released their first EP, The Better Party, two years later. While EARTHGANG - Mirrorlandattending Hampton University, Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot also founded the Spillage Village collective of rappers, producers, and singers; in addition to the duo behind EARTHGANG, members include J.I.D, Hollywood JB, JordxnBryant, Mereba, 6LACK, and Lute. Spillage Village also serves as a record label and is the home to the collective's first three releases, the Bears Like This (2014) and Bears Like This Too (2015) EPs, and the Bears Like This Too Much LP (2016).

Prior to releasing their debut full-length, Shallow Graves For Toys (2013), EARTHGANG recorded a handful of singles and mixtapes, gradually attracting notice from the music press and industry heavy-hitters. The duo's sophomore LP, Strays with Rabies, followed in 2015. By 2017, EARTHGANG had signed to J. Cole's Dreamville Records. The duo released a trilogy of EPs over the course of 2017-2018: Rags, Robots, and Royalty. Their major label debut, Mirrorland, landed in September 2019, with contributions from Young Thug, T-Pain, Kehlani, Malik, and Arin Ray.

"I don't trust people with soul patches except Dizzy Gillespie," WowGr8 exclaimed in this What's In My Bag? episode while holding up a copy of the jazz trumpeter's Have Trumpet, Will Excite! album. "I got into his music in high school," he continued, explaining his respect for the jazz legend. "I played trumpet in high school 'cause he did." Having not seen this particular LP before, he was excited to take it home.

Olu grabbed a copy of Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, calling it an "amazing book...just a beautiful book about truth," while WowGr8 found a Harry Potter book on the the artifacts within the world of the series. "Shoutout to J.K. Rowling for having that type of imagination," he proclaimed.

Also in their bags: Sade, a Prince coffee table book, Rick and Morty, a Led Zeppelin Poster, and a Whitney Houston prayer candle.

But what is one of Olu's favorite movies ever? And just who is WowGr8's favorite rapper? You'll have to watch the video to find out!
