#3 N.O.R.E.  5E LP (Mass Appeal Records)

Two and a half decades on and Queens, NY hip-hop vet N.O.R.E. is still putting it down as witnessed by his latest solo,  5E LP.  Initially unveiled last July the album  is now available on vinyl from Amoeba c/o Nas’ imprint, Mass Appeal Records. The album from the artist formerly known as Noreaga, who originally rose to fame as half of legendary 90’s NYC hip hop duo Capone-N-Noreaga, finds common ground between the old school and new school rap sounds, has a grip of great features that include Wyclef Jean, Yung Reallie, Fat Joe, Sevyn Streeter, Pharrell and Tory Lanez. The album’s title 5E  is inspired by number of the Corona Queens apartment that the 41 year old rapper born Victor Santiago Jr. grew up in. Upon its initial digital release last summer, the ever active N.O.R.E. tweeted that it would be his “last album.” Although the “Drunk Uncle” artist, whose schedule includes producing his Drink Champs podcast and a food show with Complex called On the Run Eatin', has made similar statements in the past about quitting recording. Among the 11 track album’s standout songs are the Fat Joe featured “Don’t Know” (music video below), The Dream produced and featured “Woof,”  the weed anthem “LaLa” that’s impressive features include Wyclef, Jadakiss and Phokus who also produced the song, and “Uno Mas” with long time collaborator Pharrell Williams. Longtime fans of N.O.R.E. and Pharrell will recall how back in 1998 on his first self-titled solo album how The Neptunes (Pharrell with Chad Hugo) produced their breakout hit for  “Superthug.”

Also featured on this 99 West Coast classic were Abstract Rude and Aceyalone of SoCal’s Haiku D'Etat. The other Grouch reissue is the artist’s critically acclaimed, self-produced seventh solo album originally released by Legendary Music back in 2002 and then again in 2004; the 15 track classic  Crusader For Justice 2LP. Reissued with the 2004 version cover artwork, the album’s many bangers include Dragonfly, Crumble Your Tower, Backseat Drivers featuring Safari and Scarub, and “Crusader For Justice.” With guitar played by Stu Blank cuts by Bicasso, the title track’s accompanying music video appears below.
