Hip-Hop Top Five: 21 Savage, Egyptian Lover, T.I., Bas, Dr Octagon (SP 1200 Remixes album) + Flatbush Zombies Colored Vinyl 2LP

#1: The Egyptian Lover  1985 (also on vinyl 2LP) (Egyptian Empire)

Following hip-hop veteran the Egyptian Lover's 2015 album release 1984, now comes 1985 (also on vinyl 2LP) from the legendary LA artist. This latest new studio album from the revered electro pioneer clocks in at just over an hour with 13 tracks in all; five of these with guest collaborators. These include  "Beyond The Galaxy" featuring the world's greatest turntablist DJ Qbert, "Future Tech" featuring Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins, "The World Keeps Turning" featuring old school electro crew Newcleus ("Jam On It"), "Problems Of The World" featuring Zarcon and "Come On" features Funkmaster Ozone. Other tracks on the new album include  "5 Cent Camel Ride," "International Freak" and ‘Everything She Wants" which is an updated version of the Wham! hit single.




#2:  21 Savage I Am > I Was (Epic)

Hard working popular hip-hop artist Savage 21, who last year released his acclaimed album Issa Album (also on vinyl/LP) and who this year did a grip of guest spots on other artists’ tracks over 2018, has just dropped his latest studio album, the fifteen track I Am > I Was on which he shares the spotlight with numerous other collaborators. This impressive list of album guests includes ScHoolboy Q, Childish Gambino, J. Cole, Offset, Post Malone, Lil Baby, Gunna and more. Meanwhile production duties are split between Metro Boomin, Tm88, Southside and others.




#3 Dr. Octagon Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation
[The SP 1200 Remixes] 2LP

Back in early April this year we witnessed the long overdue return of Kool Keith,  Dan the Automator, and DJ Qbert, with the sequel to their Dr. Octagon project landmark debut Dr. Octagonecologyst from 1996;  the 2018 follow up album Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation (also on vinyl/2LP).  Then a couple of weeks later, for Record Store Day 2018, they released a limited edition instrumental version of the album (also via Bulk Recordings) that quickly sold out.  Fast forward to this week and we get the remix version of the album; Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation [The SP 1200 Remixes] 2 LP.  Sporting a new color-altered version of the album cover art, this new release features all the same tracks but each given remix treatment by Dan the Automator  utilizing the historic sampler that shaped hip-hop's golden age; the E-MU SP-1200.




#4 Bas Milky Way LP (also avail on CD) (J Cole Dreamville / Interscope)


Milky Way by Bas has been available in Amoeba on CD for a while but now this week the vinyl version of Milky Way LP  has arrived into Amoeba. This is the third studio album by the French born / Queens NY artist signed to J. Cole's imprint via Interscope following his 2014 debut studio album Last Winter and 2016's Too High To Riot. The album's tracks include the singles "Boca Raton (feat A$AP Ferg)" and "Tribe (feat. J. Cole)." Meanwhile the album's overall message is one of positivity with Bas posting a description to Instagram that read in part; "This album is about finding ground. About not poisoning your own well. About finding and tethering yourself to the love that truly fulfills you. Love of self. Love of others."



#5 T.I. Dime Trap 2LP (also avail on CD) (Epic)

T.I.'s 2018 album Dime Trap album first released a couple of months ago by Grand Hustle via Epic, is now available on vinyl as the  Dime Trap 2LP  set. The album is the pioneering trap music artist's first official studio release since 2014's Paperwork. "In the trap with a trap door" raps T.I. on "What Can I Say"
which is one of the many standout album tracks. Another is "Jefe (featuring Meek Mill)," "What Can I Say," "You (feat. Teyana Taylor),"  and "At Least I Know (feat. Anderson .Paak)."




Flatbush Zombies Vacation In Hell Clear Vinyl with Black Smoke Colored 2LP (Glorious Dead) 

Released several months ago Vacation In Hell by Flatbush Zombies was the super-talented hip-hop duo from the Flatbush district of Brooklyn, New York's anticipated follow-up to their 2016 debut (3001: A Laced Odyssey). Released this week for collectors (and limited to one per customer) is the album's limited edition colored double vinyl version; Vacation In Hell Clear Vinyl with Black Smoke Colored 2LP.
